I was told recently by a bosch specialist that swapping my 55A alternator for a 70A one would give me more power and hence the ability to run the extra equipment I will install amps, speakers etc.:D

His assertion is based on the idea the 70A unit is more efficient.

I have the option of get the remanufactured unit for approx £40 inc delivery but I must drink from the fountain of knowledge that is you the reverred members of this forum.

Is he giving me the morning sunshine I have been looking for or is he throwing nuts and bolts in to my morning cereal:?:

When the engine is running, you're basically running off the alternator . If you draw more than it can provide, you start drawing off the battery too. If you draw less, then the extra can go to recharge your battery. So, if you need > 55Ah to run the car plus your toys, then he's right. If you don't then it's a waste of time. Then again, for that cost, why not? There's no real downside, if you don't need the extra power, it won't be produced.

As you draw more current from the altenator you draw more power from the engine. Maybe not a concern for a mobile disco, but if you want performance, beware!

I was told this particular Alternator doesnt just generate more power but is more efficient so I don't expect more tax on the engine.

I remember from BMW days, the E34 M5 alternator could rob 15 BHP from the engine, that was back in 1990-ish.

One must remember that you can give volts, you cant give amps, the components that require current (amps) will draw what they need, what is not needed is not produced
