Cameras which monitor motorists' average speed as they pass roadworks on one of Britain's busiest motorways will have raised almost £1 million in fines by the time they are finally removed next month

However, the system has proved controversial, with campaigners from the Association of British Drivers claiming it encourages people to "put their cars in cruise control and their minds in neutral" and does not necessarily lead to more responsible driving. Critics have also questioned why the reduced speed limit remains in place at night, when the roads are clearer.

Can hardly drive more than 40mph when I was around that area for 3 months, constant breakdown area for lorries. During the motorcycle shooting in Aug last year it was a logger jammed.

It is very simple, once you have cut & pasted, highlight the text and press the "wrap
tags around selected text button". It is the yellow button that is fourth from the right on the reply to thread page that looks like a speech bubble.

we've got average speed cameras on a long stretch of dual and single carriageway in our area to try to reduce the carnage. it has halved the death toll and it has been decided to keep the cameras. ho-hum.

They are in someways not a bad thing, though on a long journey one has to keep up a fair speed, and you can arrive at your destination a little more relaxed, but somewhere along the line you have to trade off the time sitting behind the wheel against any stress when driving very fast, there must be a middle of the road somewhere

Average cameras will be replacing the std Gatso over the next couple of years. No more slowing down for the camera then speeding up again.

Pretty soon your whole journey will be "averaged"!

Average speeds for average drivers?

As Malcolm said, top speed and average speed are somewhat different. As a rule of thumb, if you drive at 70 ish on a motorway, you will average around 60. Drive at 60 mph on A roads, you will average just over 40.

It will be interesting to note the average speed the enforcers choose to enforce. Average 70 would presumably accept that to achieve that average, one must drive a fair part of the journey at 90. No problem, I hear you say!

I wonder if, like drinking and driving, a school of "experts" will emerge who will offer expert views on how fast you can drive and remain (just) legal, rather in the same way as they advised on how much you could drink whilst avoiding prosecution?

The analogy is not that silly (or unpredictable) in that the fastest you should drive (or the most you should drink before driving), depends on what is safe given your capabilities and the conditions (vehicle, weather, road, visibility, other traffic, etc).

For alcohol, the true answer is zero! Go figure. :-|:-|:-|

It true, driving at higher speed, you don't tend to doze off as adrenalin flow more. What you really need is fresh air ie put down your roof, even at 50mph, it a breeze and keep you awake.
