Nonsense price really. The perceived value of classic cars has become ridiculous and I can't help but think that this market is due an almighty crash in the not too distant future. I remember reading an advert in an old magazine, the asking price for a gullwing was £800, presumably at a time when they were simply old cars.

It's like any investments, they go up and down.
The secret is not to panic with investments when they drop, we didn't and just left our money there, some years we lost a lot, some we regained, at the end of the investment we came out on top because it was money we never missed in the first place. Though I think the stock market is a different kettle of fish?

The 300SLR Gullwing doesn't greatly appeal to me, particularly as I like to drive my cars.

I'd rather have SL63 V8, an Aston Martin DB6 Volante Vantage, or a Series 2 E Type convertible, or on reflection one of each plus a new air conditioned garage.

Agreed, I'd rather have one to drive, than so expensive you couldn't. Which is driving demand (see what I did there...) in "copies" - the owners of these unbelievably expensive cars have copies made that they can drive and use as they can't use the original

Sweet as that car is I can't see me spending £135M on it.
Who has that sort of Monopoly money to spend on anything?

For sure, it is a kettle of something fishy :)

Yes, I agree, the car is an utterly ridiculous price. I wonder whether we seeing a situation emerge whereby in another few hundred years cars like this are going to be revered in a similar way to a Da Vinci painting or a Stradivarius violin are revered today.

I would love an Eagle E-Type, would look great next to a Guntherworks 911 and a Singer 911

I would happily add a Gunter Werks 993 Targa to my expanding collection.

Only 2 in the world the other one being the one that Moss drove in the Mille Miglia itself so I can see where the value is. It certainly makes a Ferrari 250GTO look cheap.

You're quite some way out there, Mercedes actually built a total of nine of these 300SLRs, seven of which were almost identical open one and two seat versions, and also the two that had a roof on, one of which is the car recently sold at auction for a large sum of money to a buyer who prefers to remain anonymous. I could guess who that person might be, but it would only be a guess, so I'll say nothing. The two closed cars only differed in the colour of their upholstery, one was red and the other was blue, and it's the red one that's been sold. Both were built as full race cars, but that never happened. At the time the cars were built in the mid 1950s, they had quite short racing careers, MB stopped their race programme after the horrific 1955 LeMans crash which involved one of the open SLRs driven by Pierre Levegh who died in a fiery crash which killed more than eighty people. Open versions won races driven by to my mind, the two greatest racing drivers of the 20th century, Juan Fangio and Sir Stirling Moss, one of whose best known wins was in the 1955 Mille Miglia, during which he averaged just under 100mph over a 1000 mile course on closed public Italian roads, an achievement that will never be surpassed. The car just sold, the one with the red interior, was driven by a man I know, well known motoring writer Doug Nye, in the 2010 Mille Miglia Retro, which was a tour and not a race. As well as the 300SLR, Doug has also driven several Ferrari 250GTOs, which he says are rather nicer to drive than the Mercedes, more comfortable and much more forgiving. The two closed cars are often popularly referred to as "Uhlenhaut coupés, but this is not strictly correct, Rudi Uhlenhaut was the Mercedes technical chief back then, and he ran the blue trimmed version as his Company car for a while. MB would never part with that one, it lives in the Mercedes Museum near Stuttgart, it's unlikely ever to leave that place, and that one is the only true Uhlenhaut coupé, not the one just sold.
