Just had my oldie MB workhorse checked over for its MOT next month, and to try and avoid any hidden shocks.

For those unfamiliar with its history, I bought it after it had been standing around in a farmyard for 4 years; had a few teething problems getting it to start relaibly after the emissions had been adjusted for the last MOT, but since then very little other than wear and tear replacements and a hidden boulder holing the exhaust back box.

It's parts are about as eccentric as its owner, and the service history I had was very questionable - in fairness, several sensible members here did advise me not to buy it as a result but...

However, I have worked it hard hauling animal feed, logs, junk etc. over the past ten months or so, and although not covered a great mileage compared to many, much of that has been over very rough tracks and ground.

All the local garage can find so far that will/may fail it for the test are...

1. How to access the rear seat belts to check if they still exist! (Really must find somewhere else to store the junk in the back, and I have simply never needed to put the rear seat up since I bought it!) :D

2. Possibly the driver's wing mirror if they look closely enough - and which someone whacked in passing and broke a bit of plastic inside, but the other bit is still holding it in place - just! (And the lads at the garage are looking for a replacement when around the scrap yards.)

3. The 'B' emissions! (I just knew that one would be coming!) Why, oh why is it that, when those are supposedly set right she will NOT start easily when cold?

Just hoping they haven't missed anything. Will let you know, but those who said this old motor would do my job were right, and my damaged back and shoulder have improved a lot for having the PAS and foot operated handbrake.

I hope so, too. :)

It's a petrol and has been modified from and automatic to a manual gearbox at some point in its life. (Like I said, a bit eccentric, but it suits me. ;D )

Totted up my total spend on petrol since I bought it early last January - £190 - that's about 9.79 miles per litre of petrol, I think? (But I was always bottom of the class in maths!) Something CANNOT be right there!

Speedo says I've done 1,860 miles - monthly petrol account receipts read 2 x £10; 7 x £20; 1 x £30.

:D

Mine can't be right, as much of my driving is in low gears, with lots of stops and starts and up and down hills. Plus the car is usually loaded, too. That often with up to ten or twelve sacks of animal feed in the back.
