Hi
My car failed on the mot today due to

Excessive play in lower suspension ball joint. How much would this cost

and exhaust emits an excessive level of metered smoke for a non turbo engine. What would cause this and how could it be put right.

Car is the C220D w202

The lower ball joints are ~£20 supply only, so not expensive

A good old Italian Tune-up should sort your emissions - get the car up to temp and THRASH it along a fast road in third gear for 10 mins or so, keeping the revs close to the redline. This will blast all the crap out. Also make sure the car's hot before it gets retested (another thrash to the MOT centre).

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
You could also clean out the breather pipe from the sump to the air box.

As well as the 'italian' tune-up i would check the condition of the air filter as a clogged filter will cause excessive smoke.....or remove it completely just for the re-test ;)
