Does any member have experience of getting a mileage discrepancy on an old MOT sorted?

Car in question is 4 years old but at 3 years on it's first MOT mileage was incorrectly recorded as 280,000 rather than 28,000...

Current mileage is 33,000.

How quickly can this be sorted and what is the process? I am guessing it will come up with mileage discrepancy on HPI if it is not sorted!

I have recently had a series of MoT certificates corrected.

EMail: motreplacement@dvsa.gov.uk with all the details, and ask for an acknowledgement, mine took about a month to be processed.

You can also contact the MoT Replacement team at the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agencyby phone: 03001239000

Good luck.

Let us know how you get on.

You do need to get it fixed. It creates a great big alarm on the HPI check. You can fix it at the HPI end to if you can provide enough evidence to HPI to convince them it's an error. Unsurprisingly it happens quite a lot because there's no validation on the input to the HPI system. They take MoT data, dealer service data etc. and in my case a reg transfer meant they'd merged the wrong vehicle into the mileage history of my car.

Yes it is a pain to be honest. This is on a car I have put a deposit down to buy (per my other thread)...not sure how it can be proved it was an error? But I have told the dealer I will not buy it if this is not fixed as to be honest I do not want that headache to have to deal with at a later stage.

I would think that if it wasn't HPI clear you would reasonably expect to get your deposit back.

Yes, absolutely. I did make this clear when paying deposit so it should be fine. They seem to think it is an easy fix and their admin team can fix it. I am a little more sceptical...

Don't want to start the car search again so let's hope it gets sorted.

Small update...the dealer tells me they are sending a video to NMR to adjust the HPI marker and it will be HPI clear...I said well it is a given that it has to be HPI clear, you are a main dealer!

However as agreed, I want the MOT record altered too. Collection is supposed to be next Tuesday or Wednesday...not looking promising and I cannot see this happening in time. Looks like will have to start looking for a backup car!

It wouldn't have stopped me from buying the car if the car was everything else I wanted it to be. An first MOT with 280 000 miles is obviously a mistake.

I agree - if it's the car you want (and it has taken a while to find the right spec!) I wouldn't worry about an error like that. Even if it takes the dealer a month or two to resolve after purchase, it won't have any impact unless you want to sell the car in that period.

But if the DVLA won't correct the mileage then you have a tainted car, which will be an issue when it comes to selling it.

I've had a few things that needed fixing on my car And I found that as long as you speak/email the general manager, things get sorted with the minimum of fuss.
Mercedes of Norwich have been exceptional in dealing with issues for me even two months after the sale.

I think it is fairly obvious that it is an error on behalf of the testing station. It probably should have gone for a re-test as soon as it was discovered.:)

This is my concern. I roll into the MB dealer in two years time and they make a fuss of the mileage 'discrepancy' and argue that a car could in theory drive 100,000 miles per annum which is 2,000 miles per week or 285 per day!

To be fair, that was my experience of my last MB purchase from a dealer. But never dealt with this particular dealer before and we know they are all different. The service at this one so far is not up to the level of my last purchase.

The service history will surely support the correct mileage covered by the car ? :)

I'm in the process of buying a used car, despite dealers assurances I always pay for an HPI check myself (£19.99 for one or a block of 3 for £29.97 the other 2 can be taken within a year), that way you can update the discrepancies (as your dealer is doing with evidence), but importantly then you have insurance against any instances afterwards. You have 30 days to log any issues.
It's worth the small cost IMO- Total Car Check do a similar service which is cheaper but their records take longer to update.
I'd go ahead I think on that basis and the evidence above. GLE's with what you are looking for disappear quickly at the moment (I know I was also looking but nothing grabbed me except an 18 plate nearby me which got nabbed!)

You getting back on the MB Wagon John, is it a replacement for the XC90?

Agreed a HPI check is always required. A friend of a friend bought an 11 year car recently with about £5k finance outstanding on it.. they only found out when the repo men came.

Conor, long and complicated but in short not yet! I had an offer from BMW on the i8 which looked great , but thought I should push it to MB and see if they could replicate against a GLE or an E Estate (213), but nowhere near! So I'm picking up a 530d touring M Sports X Drive on Monday with all bells and whistles. I Intended originally keeping the i8 for another 2 years but the offer was right ....Early next year I'll change out the XC90 for something smaller, let's see....;)
