What defines a flop? Sales? quality? design? unfullfilled expectations?

Depends a lot upon your point of view. I think the smart roadster is a cracking little car, however it didn't sell that well.

Its esy to look back in time and say that was not a pretty car, at the time it may have been much sought after like the maxi a good workhorse, the farina shaped cars from the likes of Riley, Austin, Wolsley, Ford were thought to be good looking and little american cars, rust buckets maybe but lots were sold and none were as ugly as the BMW 1 series and some of the little cheap eastern cars we now see on the roads.

I think that a flop is a car that is introduced too radically different from the norm before people are ready to accept it, the Ford Edsel was a prime example,10 years later they are the in thing.

I think the the car maker use the face lifts to see the reaction, from my point I think many face lifts spoil the car, this was apparent on the E type, and so many other classics, its always the MK1 the hold the purse strings
