I was sent this email bellow yesterday, with the link to sign. I have never heard of this government proposal.Has anyone on the forum heard of it?.If its still a proposal where did the BBC get there statistics from.

Hi please read this it affects all of you... After reading please
go and sign it....

UK ROAD TAX

Dear all,

I have done this, it's very easy. We have nothing to lose by trying - if
you don't want Tony & Gordon to have all our money because we drive a car
or bike, then please at least sign up

THIS IS REAL AND IT IS A PROPER GOVERNMENT SITE!
The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you
having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill
to use it.

The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the
BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a
delivery driver.
A non working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86
in one month.

On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody
will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have
been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit* you
can expect and additional fine with your monthly bill.

If you care about our freedoms and stopping the constant bashing of
the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/

Please pass this on to anyone who owns a car/motorcycle. It affects
them.

Its not limited to speeding. They also know where parking restrictions
etc are located. And you!

(Additional - I have just been on the No10 site and there is LESS than
100k signed up to it. There are over 30million vehicles and drivers in
this country.

Just to register 1% of those against this proposal there needs to be
300k
signed up! and the closing date is 20/02/07. Did you know about this ?
(I did't.)

There has been a lot of talk about it recently.
However
a) it's impossible to administer given today's technology. (take it from me - I'm one of the people who'd build the database)
b) they can't enforce the technology
c) the technology isn't reliable enough (how often does your GPS play up and you WANT that to work!)
d) No 10 ignore everyone but their focus groups who live in Notting hill and don't drive - hence why they think this is a good idea!
e) Gordon and his thieving cronies will be out on their arses long before they can implement this dumb idea.
Hence I'm not too worried.....yet.

I think Tony & Gordon could do a lot of good if they had some extra tax revenue. It's not like they're going to buy themselves a tropical island or something with our tax money.

A non working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.

I am not in favour of it being affordable for non-working people to drive their kids to places they could walk to.

Besides, I've seen what happens to all ambitiously large goverment IT projects, so I'm not remotely worried about this 'continuously tracking 30 millon cars at all times' concept happening in the forseeable future.

Regardless of what you think of them proposed propasal, this 'study' and its figures are completely meaningless.

They have just chosen arbiturary figures and made sure they came up with a good headline.

There is some argument about how well they've done with the vast amount they've had so far, though I agree, they don't spend it on themselves, it's just that I have little confidence in their ability not to waste it. In any case, they are tyring to sell this idea as being tax neutral. Your point about the non working people being able to walk is an interesting one. Ignoring the pros and cons, what amuses me about it is that the very people who vote in Labour are precisely the ones that would be flattened by such a policy. Tories like me would grumble, but I dare say I'd find the money and keep running my merc, whilst all those shop workers and call centre folk would be forced onto public transport leaving the roads free for me. It's almost the kind of policy an aristocratic 19th century government would come up with.

What an odd world when a tory (admittedly a rather damp one) is opposed to a Labour policy idea because it's cruel to the working class!!
