In another thread Stewart Smith happened to mention his interest in rallying, does anyone else out there get involved or just spectate, if not rallying what other motorsport interests do you have? F1, Touring Cars, Historics etc.

I know we all wear our MBOA 'anoraks', it'd be interesting to see who's got a 'rally jacket' in the cupboard (or should that be closet? LOL ) too!

Was bitten by the F1 bug four years ago after a free invite to a very wet Silverstone GP.

Went to Rockingham last year for the CART and think it could be better than F1!!

I used to follow the Network Q Rally every year and spectate in the welsh forests.... Now my family has grown it has somewhat fallen by the weyside...

Also get involved with corporate F1 days with my customers...get pit pass's etc etc
Awesome day...got one coming up in June..woo hoo..

Been an F1 fan since my teens.  Have attended a few GPs in my time (inc. Monte Carlo and Barcelona) but find the British event an absolute rip-off......although I will be at Silverstone for Friday practice in July ;-))

Greg,

Thanks for the note on the wheels, yes I think with the price of 17" tyres the 16" may be a suitable compromise! What condition are they in? (and how much?)

Seems to be more circuit racing interest, I've also been to the British GP a couple of times but find after so many years actually being involved on events, both as a competitor and organiser, that spectating does'nt hold the interest like it used too. Also I've become a little disillusioned with team tactics so early in the season.....!

If anyone is interested in rallying then the following is an excellent site with a forum more voluble than this one!

Richard,

Subject to seeing some wheels over the weekend, they will be 4 sale......They really are mint with excellent 205 / 55/ 16 tyres. there is one small mark on one of the rears but nothing drastic....
They are off my 2K 240 Sport and they are washed every weekend since I've had her....

Mail me off-line and we'll keep in touch about them..
As for £...we'll talk...

I posted this in reply to yer last message - but that thread seems to have vanished....

Yup - gotta own up.  Been off the scene for a while since I got involved with the Rugby club at newcastle a few years ago, but the DT's are starting to set in because I haven't smelt Castrol R for a while - last time I was out was on the Croft Stages in January. I did some start marshallig in trackrod country a few years ago.  ( I'm a gods country chap too - ever since I watched Michele's uphilll drag from a standing start out of the woodyard in the S1. ) Gotta admit that the Rugby leaves little time for the muddy(er) stuff now.  I'm ashamed of your custom 'wheel' fetish tho Rich ;-) - wouldnt you be better investing in a set of Michelin M4's ? I think I'll renew my HartlepoolDMC membership, cos i am chief marshal.  Also used to have a Skoda Estelle 130 - real rallying machine, complete with Lucas 20/20's and a surprising skoda sunstrip. That never had a leaky headgasket either.
p.s. - what do elegance alloys look like? you got any pics?

Hi Stewart,

Yes I have got a pic, on my home machine. I'm not very good at this posting on the forum thingy so I'll send a PM tonight.

Interesting that you remember Mich*ll
e in the woodyard, I have vivid memories of my first rally in '76 the Mintex (no I'm not that old I went with some school friends!) with the howl of BDA's echoing round the woodyard and the sheer spectacle of a Mk2 at an unfeasible angle four feet away (sounds dangerous I know but it hasn't changed!), suprising that the most memorable car was Alan Carter's Toyota Celica - because it wasn't a Mk2 or Chevette I think.

I was Chief Marshal for Trackrod in the early 90's, did some navigating - on road rallies in a Mini Cooper, stage rallies in a Gp4 Mk2 and GpA Manta and we were NORC class champions in a 200BHP V8 Land Rover Series 1. That was an excellent season, consistency meant we were 3rd overall in the championship against 350BHP 4.5 V8 buggies!

I had to relocate 'darn sarf' a few years ago which curtailed my competitive outings and a family means the money now goes elsewhere (But I'm sure if I was still in the navigators seat then I wouldn't have the Merc!).

Helping to organise means I'm still involved and after 20 years actively marshaling and competeting I now work as Stage Commander on events like the Tour of Mull and navigate in a course car on our own event in the BRC.

Give me a shout if you're planning an outing to the Trackrod this year - first time in the BRC!

Have to admit, i have been, up until last year, a member/driver for the wasps.

Who the h*ll
are they i hear you cry....

The are infact a banger racing team, we raced at arena Essex for about 3 years on the trot, come rain or shine, we were there through the whole season.

If you ever want to have a quality (but very dirty) Sunday then thats the place for you. Its everything you ever wanted to do in a car, but couldnt on a main road!!!

And Dave E...that explains my line up of dodgy Fords on the mercedesshop forum!!!

Matt.

I was under the impression that a history of dodgey Ford ownership, was a prerequisite in your neck of the woods??

Matt,

Never got involved with banger racing, but I used to work on Shepherds Bush Green - close...?

Seriously though, I helped out spannering for friends who ran grasstrack specials and the minis in class 1 were an absolute hoot to watch - no power at all so momentum was vital - thus none of them ever slowed down for the corners and to see mini 850s three abreast fighting for 6th place was far more entertaining than any Grand Prix!

We're getting somewhere now, GPs Rallies, Bangers, any more takers? or even anyone had their car at a track day?

If its got an engine to power it, then i'll watch it race,  and I am being serious when i say,  that one of the most entertaining days racing i ever saw, was when a mate and i happened to stumble upon a "Lawn mower" race day, it was hilarious
