Hellooo!

I have had my 2004 C230 for just over a week now and I am enjoying it so far. The only question I have is that when I put the car into park and then put the parking brake on it moves forward slightly once I lift off the brake.

Is this normal with a mercedes auto?

Any info on this would be great!!

Thanx
Mike

What do you mean "when I lift off the brake"?

When you lift your foot having applied the parking brake? - Not normal.

Hello :)

I mean, arrive home, foot on brake, move into park, then apply parking brake with left foot, then lift off brake and the car moves a little.

Like the handbrake is a little slack?

Someone will be along in a second I'm sure with C specific info - on my E it doesn't settle at all - firm as soon as the pedal is down. My old Disco however used to move about 3/4 mile as the thing tightened!

Does it hold firm on a hill on the brake alone?

Yes that is normal,, my SL moves a touch when I do that.

the parking brakes are not that good and most of us just leave the car in P for the best part

Do you mean the parking brake when the auto box is not in park? I have parked on a hill ok with it in park and parking brake on but it does have that settle in movement.

Probably absolutely fine then - I'd find a hill and put the brake on with the box in N just to make sure it's doing what it should then you'll know.

As said above - lot's of us never use the thing at all - I don't unless I'm parked on a hill, in which case it makes me feel better!

My driveway is on a slope and there are times when I think that it will go into the garage after I have applied the parking brake and then go to P and take my foot off the pedal

Both my Mercs roll an inch or two when the parking brake is applied.

My experience is the same as Television's. The car settles as the footbrake is released. My driveway is a 1 in 4 slope and either Park on the auto box or foot operated parking brake will hold just fine, but I always use both. It makes no difference if the car is facing up or down the slope.

My old C200 auto did the same.

My SL moves as well when on a slope. I usually apply the parking brake and let it settle before moving to "park". My old Jag used to be a bugger to get out of park on a slope if you let it move forward in park before setting the parking brake..

Mine does it also and so does my Dad's C-Class, it is normal on Mercs so don't worry.

all ours move differing amounts

from barely perceptible on the 202 to a couple of inches on the 124. As long as it stops eventually, and not too far down the road, it should be alright.
I put the service brake on and operate the parking brake while selecting P on the autos, hoping to keep everything nicley equalised and balanced out.

I think that is common on all Automatic cars to move slightly after you have selected park and then release the footbrake.

I've noticed that in other auto cars - it's not just a Mercedes thing
