Im looking at buying a Merc Diesel Auto around 1988 to 1994 and would like some advice on the mpg i could expect to get from a 190D, 250D or 300D or similar.
I need a large diesel auto but dont want to run something really uneconomical.

Hi
I have a 1994 C250, I recently checked the mpg and I am getting 32 around town. I have not checked it out on a long run but it must be pretty good.
I have had my car 8 years now and its yet to fail a MOT. Its a dream! dont hesitate in buying a Merc you will not regret it.

Cheers

I can normally get 36mpg in mixed driving but my best mpg was in Finland 40.2mpg at around 100kph across the entire country. These old W124's are normally 4 speed autos and their 90kph mpg is pretty good - 42mpg for my 3litre diesel - but at 120kph this falls to 33mpg - at least according to the blurb that came with mine. I don't tow but the car does get fully loaded up.
Note towards the end of the W124 range, a few made it to the UK in RHD with 5 speed auto's though I think this was only an option on the E300 or E320 petrol variants, not on the diesels. Not 100% sure though.
Hopefully this will help you.

Can't give you any diesel figs but I'm sure others runjning such cars will. As a comparison my petrol 88 reg 300TE gave between 23-27 depending on use. Diesels are usually at least 25% better, and should put you in the 27-35 range for an e-class.
