I'm stumbled across a CLS55 which on the face of it sounds clean and decent, however, having done an online MOT check, its shows the MOT expired in 2015, until which time it was covering low miles annually. The trade seller describes the car as immaculate and has had it for some time, asking the top end of prices but, something isn't adding up for me. Even the most cherished garage queen would see the light of a sunny day or two annually and if it was really as good as he says, it would have sold.

I was hoping if this registration rings a bell to any members or, even a previous owner who can shed more light on it such as if it may have been damaged and unrecorded or suffered some major/expensive mechanical issue causing it to have not been used for the last 6 years.

I think I'll be staying clear of this one as well, just don't fancy the sound of something not having been used for over 5/6 years.

Could it have been clocked ? Or the mileage, you know, ahem, "adjusted" ?

The original low mileage adds up on the MOT check website. But 6 years off the road since......

Did you ask the seller why its been off the road.

have you a link?

Seeing what I have seen with cars and customers over the years, I never take anything on face value but, go over any potential purchase myself from top to crawling underneath etc to see if things look consistent etc. I just can't think why it hasn't sold and why its not been MOT'd for several years. Even people who have garage queens at least take the vehicle for an MOT annually. To me it sounds like something went horribly wrong with it either mechanically or accident wise.

When I asked if I could have the reg to do an MOT I was told it was not needed as tye car is all legit

Link here. linky

I'm not keen on the colour combo but was interested due to the low mileage and potentially sensible number of owners and FSH but the MOT details have me concerned.

Hello….

All sounds odd, the Log oil was last issued April 2014. Hasn’t been taxed since 2015 so assuming the April 2014 buyer registered immediately he kept it for a year and then stopped using it.

Also it says “ untaxed - tax due 16 June 2015 “ this sounds like it hasn’t even been SORN .

Personally I would steer clear ?!

My 911 last had an MOT in 2016 due to circumstances outside of my control.... My mot cost me nearly £7k in December 2020 when I put it back on the road..,,
Sitting around doing nothing isn’t good for cars.
I’d want to have a good look underneath and with all the wheels off before investing...

could it have been exported, driven to the moon and back, then been re imported.

If that car had been literally sat for 6 years I would expect mould inside and rodents been having a good time in the engine bay. i smell a rat (excuse the pun).

cant compare a porsche 911 to this car Blobcat, chalk and cheese

I’m not comparing them, what I’m recounting is there can be very valid reasons why cars are off the road and that they can all require some serious ££££ to get back on the road, even though they might look perfect on the outside.

I saw it a while back and over the months slowly thought perhaps that colour would work but, every Perlite grey looks different on photos so was thinking of popping down to take a look in person as I've been asked to source a Mitsubishi EVO X for a client and spotted one about a 1hr 30 min drive away from this and slowly convinced myself perhaps the colour would grow on me. Its only since I managed to obtain the number plate and ran a check its got alarm bells ringing and thought perhaps, if its known in the forum circles an explanation may arise as to what's been going on with it.

With its uncertain history, I would not even make an offer without an inspection by a decent Mercedes indy.

I recently put my 1998 33,000 mile Z3 back on the road after 9 years of non use. No MoT in all that time. I've just SORNd it again, albeit with a MoT till August. MoT history doesn't show on the gov site.

Reason it hadn't been used - a 3 person family can't travel in a 2 seat car.

Had an Astra GTE Champion that was off the road more often than not over 12 years. Again, no Mot over many years.

Reason it hadn't been used, I was working overseas for many years and never got to use it. I sold it to a young lad for cash. It was subsequently cleaned up featured in a magazine. It hasn't been driven as the guy who bought it from the lad was once at a dealers where he offered to buy it off me when it was in for service. He takes it to shows on a trailer.

Even if the car is genuine I wouldn't want to buy a car thats not been use for that length of time.
As Blobcat said could worth out very expensive, plenty of others out there.

Could it of been in Ireland for the last few years?

Would explain the lack of mot information.

I'm with Blobcat - no car likes sitting for years. Even a routine recommissioning service would cost - and is the very least I would consider.

If the car had been SORN due to geniune non use, then fair enough and the selling dealer should simply clarify.
I have a T25 VW campervan on SORN for the last 5 years, my plan is to give to my son when he is 18, he is 7 now, so some waiting to go yet. My growing family means we cant use it for trips and I am loath to sell it as I have done so much work to it myself over the previous years.
It gets started once a month and thorough check over and a drive on my land.

My motorbike and Supra have been relegated to garage queens and I agree sitting is not good for anything as things can begin to seize and deteriorate. However, they get a full works service and MOT annually and I try and make an effort to take them for an odd day trip here and there every so often to keep things nicely moving.

NOT BEING USED REASON : dealer advises last owner bought it but, as he had several other cars, this was not used, hence being off the road and stored carefully. However, he advises that its been started and moved around since.... A year or so is different but 5/6 years is outside my comfort zone.
