Hi, my name is jamie and this is my first post on this forum.
Had my 1997 W210 E class 2.0 petrol in for an MOT today and it failed on the emissions, CO was 8.23 at it's highest reading and 5.42 at it's lowest.
I fitted a new full exhaust including cat before putting it in for an MOT, I also fitted a new universal Bosch lambda sensor when the exhaust and cat were fitted as the car has done 114000 miles and still had the original fitted and as the car was heavy on fuel it was also puffing out some black smoke.
The guy who tested it seemed to think that the lambda sensor was probably causing the CO level to be so high as the lambda reading was very low.
Also the revs seem to cut out like it has a rev limiter at between 3500-4000 rpm while I am driving the car, could it be connected to the emissions problem?
Has anybody had similar experience or can anybody offer me any advice?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Jamie.

Welcome to the site,

You dont State what engine you have in the W210!

If the car is holding back at 3500-4000 rpm, then i suspect it could be something like an airmass sensor or along them lines!!

Ah, now edited! 2.0 engine, thats quite a good lump! under powered but dont give a lot of trouble!!

Have you had any fault codes read, that might start pointing you to "where to start" ???

Thanks for your speedy reply.
I haven't had any fault codes read yet as cash is tight with xmas coming up and I am working flat out at the moment (I am a taxi driver). I was hoping that somebody else may have had a similar problem and would be able to point me in the right direction.
I have a spare MAF sensor that I could try, if it is the same I will try an OEM lambda sensor.
Jamie.

IMO, the CO is far too high to be a lambda sensor fault. I would be looking at something more fundamental, like MAF, as already mentioned, or coolant temp sensor.

CO, by definition, is partially burnt fuel. HC is unburnt fuel. What was the HC reading??

A code reading, and live data examination would reveal more...

Agreed - first thing is to get the codes read.

BUT do find an indie that is experienced with your generation of car, and may not need STAR if very early 210 model.

£30 for a quick read of the codes and feedback of likely problems to you (20 minutes max).

Quite likely the coolant temp sensor has gone out of spec.

my w210 e230 failed on emmisions today also.my problem is finding an indie in my area that has a diagnostic reader.im in fort william.one garage has a bosch reader, and said that his reader has a 16 pin plug but the connections would'nt match up so he will put some wires in and hopefully they'll talk to each other....would this work??

An Italian tune up would get the car through the test ,just lock it in 3rd and give it a good belting

garage says chuck in two bottles of injector cleaner and give it some welly prior to the retest and that will do it. it passed first idle test but failed on second idle test..
