Hello all

My car won’t stop it keeps running even with out the key in it.

I did assume that it was the solenoid, but have read previously about a vacuum pipe on the diesel pump being the cause.

The questions I have are as follows.

Does an H reg (1991) 190 2.5D Merc have a diesel pump vacuum pipe setup, if so where does it run from and to?

Can the Solenoid be repaired or replaced independently from the starter (I’m having trouble sourcing one).

Thanks for any help

Open bonnet & find the brown plastic vacuum pipe coming from the driver's side dash. There may be two of these. Trace the one that goes to the unit in the middle of the inlet manifold. This unit is what stops your engine. It should have no vacuum when engine is running & the switch to vacuum when key is switched off (could be the other way round, it's been a while. Either way it should change) It is easier to check for vacuum near the brake resovoir as there is a join there.

If you look between the branches of the inlet manifold you'll see a gap & a manual shutoff lever with a red handle. Push that and it'll stop

The handle manually actuates the pneumatic shutoff. Trace the pipes back and you'll probably find th leak that is preventing teh shutoff from working

Thanks for your help but I’ve still not solved the problem.

I’ve followed the pipes as well as I could and found no damage. I will recheck them again with a better light.

Do the pipes joint inside the rubber tubing near the bulk head, they appear to pass straight through?

I only happens when the engine is warm, the key seems to work fine until the engine gets up to temperature, does this have any baring on the diagnosis?

Thanks again for your help

i had the exact same problem on my old 190d before i sold it, and it was bizarre as i only noticed the problem when the heater temperature controls were pointed in a specific direction (down as far as i recall), so re-configuring them in a different direction allowed the car to stop,

the car is sold now so i've no idea why this was happening but i just thought i'd mention it, btw, prior to finding this out to stop the car i put the handbrake on, shoved it into 1st gear, foot on brake, and removed clutch fast.

cheers

my prefered gear is 5th...it seems to stall with less drama than 1st. And thankfully it is a manual. Twiddling the heater knobs hasn't helped, but i will try flashing the lights, honking the horn and changing radio stations;).

A diesel
Maybe he just kept filling it with diesel to keep it running the whole time.
