Anyone here ever been driven to distraction by a door lock mechanism
that ratttles over the bumps?

Both my front doors are doing so, the drivers door being particuarly bad. I guess its a reflection of the fact there is slight droop so not a perfect tight fit against the door striker/slam.

At the moment I've come up with a quick fix involving some tape rolled up ad stuck in the leading edge of the striker. Is the only good fix to adjust the door or the striker?

Mike.

I had this problem with the nearside door for about 4 years  !!

It has been getting worse and worse!

I just could not pin it down in terms of the source, I thought it was the door but it could even have been something around the seat belt slider - just was not sure.............

The darn things was it was so erratic, sometimes it would hardly do it, other times it was almost continuous.

In the end it was so damn annoying I asked the wife to drive  while I sat in the passenger seat. As the noise started I opened the door slightly and noise stopped, repeated this until I was sure it was the door.

We were on route to her mothers so while she went in to see the old bat  , I had a look see around the door striker. Nothing obvious so I thought a bit of elimination called for. I tore off a strip from a cigarette packet and wrapped it around the striker (door pillar fitting thingy) and slammed the door on it! Went for a drive - NOTHING - not a peep, not a squeek, not a rattle - ****** marvellous!

So either an adjustment or replacement bit called for - I thought.
Parked up, opened door removed remnants of cigarette packet - took wife home. On the way home - not a squeek or a rattle or anything from the door!!

I do not know what I have done but it is completely cured and there aint a trace of the cigarette packet in there - must have sort of forced aligned itself.

Not sure if any help to you - but I wish I had done that 4 years ago!!
