Mercedes e350 CDI 2009 W212 Pre face lift
Hi,

I have had more problems with my Mercedes rather than other cars. I have bought it with 95000 miles and now it has 103,000. DPF filter failed got it Cleaned out.

My main issue is that my mpg is very poor I get 300 miles for a full tank if I drive in the city roughly getting 15.5 mpg which is not very affordable as the prices of diesel is increasing.

Has anyone has had the same car that could advise me?

Hello and welcome,

Sounds like your's is running badly - should be >30mpg average - although around town constantly will be worse (especially if you're a taxi driver)

Welcome!

The poor fuel economy could be down to a faulty thermostat (MB have a history with poor stats). Mine failed at 65k miles and the fuel economy dropped to 20mpg so check the car is getting up to temperature and it may be the reason the DPF failed. If you do change the stat only fit a genuine MB unit aftermarket can be very problematic as the stat provides warm up information to the engine ECU

I've worked out I'm getting around 23mpg in the city and 40 on motorway. The dpf is regeneration now just not sure what it could be. Thermostat seems to be okay.

I have w212 231bhp pre face lift I done a diagnostic but everything seems to be okay. I don't know what it could be. Neither I want to take it to MB as they want to update the software for the emissions

There is definitely an issue with it assuming you’re not snared up in London traffic in which case you could expect very low mpg. I was really shocked when my stat failed open and the mileage dropped to <20mpg and it was obvious the car was running very rich. The temperature gauge was reading 40 deg all the time so I didn’t run the car until the thermostat was changed.

Oh, I’m with you on that one mine won’t be booked for the emissions update either - many many tales of woe on here from people who’ve had the update done although not so many with the OM642

My W251 is on the MB recall website for the emissions - note it is a voulantary update (it is an OM642) - maybe MB have sorted the software now

I am not sure what it is but definitely looking to investigate it as their is some form of liquid coming from the car randomly last week. But I haven't seen it again

Nothing to worry about then the E class is heavy lump so not so good around town but as you are getting 40mpg on a good run it’s fine

exactly, stick the lump in a w251 and you will be crying. First thing my indy said to me when I got it - what the hell did you get that for, they love a drink.

You really need the car up on ramps and the underbody panels removed to see where the fluid loss is coming from it could be a gearbox leak or oil cooler leak from in between the V which tends to drain from the back of the block

Yeah I'm taking on the ramp cause it has been leaking for a while randomly not everyday but I find it annoying how I had my car fixed recently asked 2 different mechanics and they said their is no leaks. It mostly happens when I idle the car in one spot. I will definitely needed this to be checked.
