Hi

I have just purchased an '89 300te 7 seater auto and I love it. The only problem is when I put it into drive it takes a few seconds and then, quite viciously tries to lurch forward, there is no smooth transition into gear like I expected. I have never owned an automatic before so I was wondering if this sounds like a clutch/gearbox prob or is it a common fault that someone has heard of before? I am quite concerned because I can imagine its putting a lot of pressure on the bearings/driveshaft as it tries to engage the gears. Anyway I am sure this is going to be the first of many questions I will ask.

Thanks

Dave

first stop is to change the atf and make sure you have the correct amount in there - either get someone else to do it for you or grab a Haynes manual which details the procedure.

If that doesn't cure it then you need to check all the vacuum feeds to the gearbox and replace any that are leaking

Finally get it checked over by somebody who knows what they are looking at. see if you have a local independent MB specialist
