in case you're not sure whether its a MAF playing up ... here's what mine did on my V plate C200

a) first noticed that on hard acceleration it wouldn't change gear reliably at high revs especially in 1st/2nd/3rd. Lifting the throttle slightly when I wanted it to change up helped...
b) after a few weeks it started developing flat spots as well. Accelerating would become uneven and hesitant at certain revs above 3000.
c) lack of general power v. noticeable going up hills
d) pinking going up hills at slow speeds (20-30mph) on initial push of accelerator

I bought a MAF for £125 from bsb on ebay - (part nos. Bosch 0280 217 114 or Mercedes 000 094 0948) fitted it and hey presto I have smooth gear changes, no flat spots and no pinking. Stangely after fitting it seems that it changes gear much earlier than it did with the faulty MAF.

and I forgot...

e) initially (when it failed to change gears at high revs @ 4k ) on return to idle it would be v rough - like it only ran on 3 cyls. Switch off and on cured the problem until I hit the high revs again
f) gear changes less even (allthough I only noticed this when I put the new one in)

MAF Failure C43

I had very similar experience in terms of symptoms.

In addition to the MAS problem I also had a couple of dodgy HT leads and a suspect coil pack. BSG mercedes kindly tested all 16 leads, 16 plugs and 8 coils (!!) before replacing only the faulty ones.

Performance now awesome once more - I hadn't noticed the gradual drop in power but had noticed bouts of part throttle hesitancy and odd gearshifts. I was also wondering why I was getting black deposits on my shiny AMG tail pipes despite a lot of recent motorway miles. Now I know :)

I'm not sure if mine is a MAS problem, but the car is struggling to change gear and going up hills at 20mph is never good. The engine is also stalling when slow and revs are alternating... could this be the culprit?

I had almost exactly the same, as well as the engine almost dying when I came to a stop and revs dropping and almost cutting out when starting from cold. Changing the plugs cured these tickover problems, everything else was sorted by the MAF.

A nice little moneyspinner for Bosch, methinks!!! ;)
