Hi Guys,

Firstly, thanks for all the great info you've posted here in the past. It helped a lot when I went to buy my 1st Merc ever at the weekend. It's a 1998 S320 with 27,000 miles.

Whilst it looks all good, the service indicator tells me that it should have been done 9,100 miles Ago, which is a worry. The service book has never been stamped (only for the PDI). The owner is deceased and any paperwork is lost.

So, I plan to book it into the garage for a health check and service (fingers crossed). I'm guessing that I should have the timing belt done (Is it a belt or chain?). Is there anything else that's likely to be urgent (apart from a much needed oil change)?.

I've HPI'd it and also have all the old MOTs so I think the mileage is genuine. The last owner obviously didn't think it needed a service!

Also, it has Sat Nav and I guess is still running the original disc. Is it worth updating?

Thanks for all your help.

John

Suggest you take it to an MB main dealer for that health check and service, might cost more in the short-term but far more likely to winkle out any potential problems - not that there should be many - or indeed any - at that mileage. Hope you've got yourself a great car and enjoy it for many years to come.

No idea about the SatNav, but that update certainly sounds like a good idea.

Assyst Reset

Nice one Sullij (John Sullivan?)

Got mine 2 months ago.... 99 SL320, 50k, FMBSH, Dark Blue.

Yipeee

When you press the left button twice quickly, time or miles remaining before next service is displayed (also displays itself close to service due time). If there is a minus sign if front of the number, this is the overdue figuire. I doubt if the previous let it go 9k past service. He probably serviced it himself and did not know how to reset the assyst.
I think that you are correct in getting the car completely checked and serviced as a precaution.
I would give it a full service plus exta items, all fluid changes etc.
Also I would not bother going to a main dealer. A good local MB specialist will do all this work.
Sat nav CDs are available on Ebay. Good Luck with your new car.

RESETING ASSYST

  • Turn key to position '2'
  • Immediately press button 1 twice within 1 second (assyst displays)
  • Within 10 secs, turn key back to '0'
  • Press button 1 again and 'hold' whilst turning key back to '2'
  • Keep button pressed till sound is heard
  • Release button

Only a day to go!!!

Thanks for the info. guys. I have booked it in for the service and Health Check on Thursday after collection tomorrow night - Can't wait.

Two things I think may need looking at: Soft Close didn't appear to work (If it's fitted - how can I tell?). It has rear laptop tray, rear blind etc, which all work. The owners son seemed to think that the windows should close themselves when you press and hold the locking button. That didn't seem to work either. After reading the book, I wonder if this is because he wasn't pointing it close enough to the infa-red sensor on the drivers door?

I think you could be right on the auto close. The locking will work by infra red or radio but the window close only works on IR. As you thought, just point the remote at the door handle and the windows should go up.

JBerks,

Do you think the soft close could be broken then? How can I tell if it was standard or an option on the 1998 model?

I see you have a Smart - me too! Well, two actually. A 2001 City Coupe and a 2003 Crossblade. Have you checked out funkysmart.co.uk?

You should be able to go into your local dealer service department, give them your VIN number and they should be able to give you a printout showing what your S320 left the factory with. Soft close were an option as far as I know.

That site is very useful but not 100% accurate for every car. There is also a certain amount of interpretation but for my car it was around 95% accurate against what I got from the dealer. It is certainly a very good start!

Well, that was interesting..

The site tells me that it left the factory painted in Green / Black. The reg document says Black and the car is Blue?! I will certainly have to check the VIN before I depart of my hard earned cash later. Hopefully, the website and the DVLA have just got it wrong.... Or the car's a ringer...!

Watch this space!

Will post again soon. Either with or withou my new Merc.

Tourmaline = Green/Black, but looks more like Blue/black. I imagine that is the colour you have.

Regards the 'comfort setting' or 'soft closing'. As JB said, it works on infra red.

You must be close to the car, and point the remote at receiver in either door handle. This is for safety I would imagine.

There is a fault with mine on the drivers door, but it works fine on the passenger door. You could try it on the passenger door. Hold 'lock' button down for several seconds close and pointing at handle, and after a few seconds windows begin to close. You can open windows with unlock button in the same manner.

I will be investigating the sensor in the drivers door and will post my findings at a later date.

My car is green black and in some lights it looks more of a blue colour. V5 says Black - nothing to worry about!

This link has photos of my car which may or may not help:
