Hi all,

Here are a couple of pics of my 2005 SL350, which I got about 3 months ago. I am very happy with it, and all I have done so far is to replace the original 17" wheels with the 18s in the photo.

Now, I think there is not enough contrast between the aluminium trim and the alpaca leather, so I am contemplating changing the trim to something darker.

So I bought the trim below (which I believe is Designo labrador blue stone , although they are really gray), but I am not sure about fitting them (ouch!). They look fantastic but they are probably not dark enough...

Should I stick with the aluminium trim, go for the Designo, or opt for black trim? I think black myself, but opinions please

This is what I did, I had the alli trim, and did not like it as it looks cheap. So I bought a walnut set from Ebay and re finished it in Piano black, with a top hard wearing plastic coating, yours can be sprayed up just fine

I personally think the aluminium looks really classy with the grey leather and would leave it as it is :)

Thanks Malcom, You have done a fantastic job on your respray. I am confident I would never be able to get it to come up so nice, so respraying is a nonstarter for me:rolleyes:

Do you/anyone know how much a new set in black ash from MB costs? Or dare I ask in Designo piano black?

Second question, as you see from my photos, the top of my centre trim piece has a couple of lips which seem to fit behind the COMAND unit. Do I need to take anything else off, other than the three screws on the side?

Thanks in advance :p

Just the 3 smaller screws each side and pull up from the rear, and your Comand stays where it is. unplug the wires and its out.

The door panels have to be taken off to do the doors, re the clips, either lift with a small screw driver one of the claws, and they will lever off, then flatten them when re fitting. I sud a flat nosed pair of pliers and took them off using a revolving action, of they cost nothing to buy.

The center panel alone in Walnut cost £1237 and the desino cost much more.

I am not sure of the colour for your car of the desino, its not to every ones taste.

Your pieces could be re finished for around £100 After each coat on mine I flatted with 1500 paper on all coats including the last and polished up with plastic polish. The actual time taken is no more than 2 hours to do it as most time is taken just waiting for it to dry and harden

I saw your other post, and many people there have seen my car and liked what I did, and all agreed you cannot see that its hand finished.

This is the best things that I have done to the car, its changed the car to something much more expensive. The black was not offered on my car when new as its a bit older than your, I also think the the black birds eye is not right on an SL.
If you ever want any advice I know them very well

Sorry to be a bit slow, but am I right in that I need to take the whole door panel off first? Are the photos or pictures of how this is done or where these clips are?

Thanks again

I can send you the info on removing the door panels.

There is a row of pegs on the door trims that the circular clips fit on

Thanks you are a star; my email adress should be available now.

Incidentally, is there a difference between black bird's eye maple and black ash trims?

Just checked and birds eye was not an option, the black ash is a kind of transparent looking with a grain in the back ground

I found your Email address and sent it

That looks like a car I looked at in Nuneaton about that time.

If you buy from a dealer then too expensive, if you have the wood trim then get it plastic coated as in my pictures above
