heres how i plan to convert my speedo from kmh. any comments welcome.

step 1. remove dash and take out central speedo , after research it seems to unscrew as a whole unit from back of dash.

step 2. remove the facia for scanning , now this is where i have to be careful , the needle sits on a pin at 20kmh . this might not be its resting point so ill have to remove pin and let needle settle at its lowest point before removal. then high quality scan the facia which from what ive studied is easily removed.

step 3. using art package , make a copy of the original and reduce (to scale) it to a size (alot of playing with text etc but this is a rough guide) to sit as the inner ring of the speedo . ill prolly turn the image to negative (i.e white + black numbers) temporary for reasons later.

step 4. make a high quaility print of this image on white paper then using a ruler from the centre point draw lines out (imagine a cake being cut) through the following numbers - 40 - 80 - 120 - 160 - 200 - 240 - 280

step 5. the above gives me mph marks at 25 - 50 - 75 - 100 - 125 - 150 - 175 , so to get the 5mph marks maths comes into play to make 4 segments between each jump. which is quite simple but harder to explain.

step 6. rescan image into art package and using pencil lines produce proper marks and numbers in right places (will take some playing to get right)

step 7. revert image back to black background white text and either print myself on high quality paper (sticky one side possibly) or get a printing company to do. (will do a test one first to check it lines up etc)

step 8. replace needle , rebuild dash and borrow a friend plus 2 way radio to check speed is correct.

when i undertake this mini project ill take piccys and update properly :) ill post it in the diy section ofc.

Before you take the needle off ,use a marker paint on the spindle and the pointer, if this is too hard, if you can get to the alli drum on the rear, you could mark this against something else in the stop position

Hi I think you could have difficulties removing the needle these thing are very fragile, it could be fixed on a taper so you would need a puller then you would have to press it back on .

I've done this with a rev counter 6 cylinder in to an 8 cylinder, I re calibrated with the needle still in place

i watched a few vids regarding removing needle , the best solution seems to be to use two desert spoons either side to ease it off. was shown on a w201 mercedes which is similar enough. cant rememberr site off hand.
