Salutations All !

Hope some one can point me in the right direction. I have a 92 SL300 and theres a few questions i need answers to:

1. although i have had the car for a year - i had to park it up for about 8 months (2 months after purchase) due to travel commitments through work. I got back 2 months ago and had the oil, oil filter and plugs changed - now then -

i've noticed that at idling the oil pressure drops to as low a 1 (on a 1 to 3 point dial) - should this be happening ???? when i move of it goes back to position 3 ??

2. The temp needle sits at about 100 degrees - not taking too long to go from 80 - to 100 ?? is this right &

3. The car seems sluggish................

Service history - does not have any - the milometer shows 87 miles - but i doubt it from the way she drives. Someone suggested that in light of the fact that the service histroy is non-existant i sohlud have the gearbox oil and filter changed - will this make a difference ???

oh - and forgot to mention - since retrieving my car from my garage - the climate control / heater etc fan has stopped working - checked the fuses and they appear correct, all the fan light illuminate but no air !

I know i've asked alot - but any assistance will be appreciated -

MM,

  • Regards your oil pressure, that seems fine. But if is only if it drops below 0.3 mb on idle or does not go up to 3mb on acceleration, then you would have a problem.
  • Maybe your cooling system could do with a flush. And a new thermostat would not go amiss either.
  • The fact that you bought the car with no history, you should 'presume' that none of the service items were performed. So all fluids and filters should be changed.
  • Regards it being sluggish, it could be that it only feels that way. My CE had the same engine, and it felt like that after coming back from holidays. To make it go fast, don't be afraid of the accelerator. Its a very heavy body, with only 200 hp or so engine, so its never going to be super fast.
Regards the 'Climate Control', post that in electrics, as you will get better feedback (hopefully)

Pascal,

Many thanks for your input - i will have the fluids changed along with the gearbox filter, re the thermostat - i recall changing this and the fan just before putting it into storage - so i'll flush the cooling system out as well !

Someone suggested having it "tuned" to make it more responsive - no then - what exactly is having your car "tuned" is it simply changing the plugs and oils - or is there more to it ?

Once again - many thanks !

MM,

They are certainly not the quickest thing around, and if you've previously had something quick and nimble the 300 will feel somewhat dead.

May sure your plugs are Bosch, as recommended for the car, make sure the air filter is clean, and try using the Super unleaded, like Shell V Power.

As regards the climate control........you may be low in refrigerant gas......if this is the case the system will not kick in. Look in your yellow pages for aircon specialists, or go to your dealer ( the most expensive option) and have the system re-charged.

Regarding Tuning

Some people use the word 'TUNED' or 'TUNE', to mean brought back to it's original new condition. It would include new plugs etc in a modern car. It should really be referred to as 'RE-TUNING'. In years gone buy it would have included other adjustments like ignition timing, carburettor mixture and idle adjustment. But with most cars now (and MBs for years) having electronic ignition and fuel injection, this type of tuning is no longer applicable.

Other people use the word 'TUNE' to mean extract more power from their engine, to include altering electronics that control fuel and ignition, fit performance air filters, or performance exhausts.

Not to mention porting, gas flowing, balancing, lightening, altering the squish angle, cam profile, skimming the head or alternatively just putting a really BIG back box on the exhaust.

It's probably easier to get it serviced.
