Hi Folks,

I serviced my wife's A170 CDI last week. all went well and it passed its MoT. The problem is that over the last week the performance has been all over the place. I noticed first that it restricted itself to 3000 rpm in all gears, but only when it was warm. It went like it should when it was cold. Then it started off OK and lost performance to 3000 rpm over a 15 minute period. This morning it was restricted when it was cold and OK when it was warm. I stopped the engine for 30 seconds, started it up and away it went, almost back to normal.

What have I done to it? Filters were purchased at my local parts supplier and fitted perfectly. Oil was fully synthetic as the book. However, I couldn't get the hatch open to get the old air filter out, so I had to loosen the top cover and refit it. At that point I noticed the aluminium housing with the black plastic top and black pipe on the right of the air cleaner housing was full of black oily muck. I wiped out the worst of it with paper towels and gave it a spray with some methylated spirit to loosen the muck that was left. The sensor, or whatever it is was absolutely coated with this stuff and it has come up reasonably clean. (What exactly is it anyway? Is it the MAFS?). The inside of the air cleaner box was not coated with this muck and neither was the inside of the old air filter. It all went back together OK with nothing left over. The engine starts first time, idles well at the right revs and is nice and smooth to drive. Except that the performance is erratic. It feels like it's in limp home mode. Anyone have any clues?

Mmmmmm. I thought it might be that. Can you just disconnect it to check if that's the problem?

i had a problem recently and i thought (wrongly) it was the MAF, so i unplugged it, and the car runs on a default. Only issue ws that when i unplugged mine it records an error and the engine management light came on..I do not know if that came on because i unplugged it, or just because the car was running crap...i had a tear in breather pipe ;p

You could try unplugging the sensor but i wouldnt suggest it means it is that because i unplugged it and the car ran normally..but i still had a tear in a pipe ;p heheh

Funny, I ran it this morning for about 15 miles and it appears to be running fine, absolutely no problem. Revved to 5k in 1st to 4th, and was pulling well in 5th.

I've got a C220 diesel which takes a few days to settle into its stride after you do anyhing to it. New oil, it runs like crap for 2 days then it's great. Adjust the throttle cable, or anything, it's the same. Seems like the engine management system is learning to cope with the changes.

Anyone else believe this, or is it a figbox of my imagination?

Auto's will do that if you reset the box's ECU - it then has to relearn your driving style.
But there's nothing else which would account for your experience.
