I'm hoping someone may have a few ideas on where to start with this problem. I've got a 1984 230e. I've had a few mechanics look over the car but the problem never shows up while they are checking it out!
The first time the problem occured I was doing 50mph on a slight downhill when the car lost power for about 30secs before it came good. A couple of weeks later (having run perfectly since) in traffic it started to shudder, no acceleration when I put my foot on the accelerator, then stalled. It would not start after trying numerous times. I left it for 5 miutes then it started and ran perfectly for another couple of weeks.
The next time was after a short drive it started to shudder when I slowed down to make a u turn, finally stalling then a repeat of it not starting untill left for 5 minutes. This all happened again a week later.
It's latest trick was to start when cold then immediately die.
I don't know if it is related but when I turn the ignition off, the motor has continued to run on roughly.
Maybe I'm posting this in the wrong section, but would apprecite some expertise
Any thoughts anyone. jamie

Hi Jamie and welcome.

The car running on when turned off is pre ignition cased by either to much coke in the head or the engine is running too far retarded, over heating the head.

The car cutting out could well be a fuel problem, and I would change the fuel filter, as this hardly ever gets done and possibly clean out the fuel pump. The pump and filter are under the rear wheel offside behind the plastic panel

You have to start somewhere, and fuel is a good place to start

Thanks Malcom. Had the fuel filter replaced a couple of weeks back, and you are right the mechanic said it may never have been changed. Also had a new distributer cap fitted as it was really hard to start in the morning, this fixed the starting problem. But the pre ignition seems to have started since the cap was changed.

That fits perfectly with the fault,,just find someone with a timing light to re set the distributor, it is a touch too far retarded, and MB engines through some reason do over heat when too far retarded. The engine should be much more lively once advanced,, you can do it by hand, slacken the clamp and move it just a bit anti clockwise, if the engine pinks ( a tinkle pinky sound) when pulling in top at 30 ish you have gone too far
