Hi All,

I have a 1995 E220 CE. For the last few weeks there has been the most annoying 'tinny' rattle from what sounds like the left rear of the car (can hear with windows open). I had a mechanic look at it but he couldn't find where it was coming from but something's loose somewhere. Also had the exhaust checked and all's fine there. When I hold the parking brake release and apply the footbrake the noise disappers? Any help would be very appreciated as its driving me crazy?

Thanks,

Les

that nails it then

it's highly likely you've a loose clip or mounting on the parking brake cable. By tensing the cable a bit, you're pressing it against the floor pan just that bit and bange goes your rattle

Thanks for that, would this be easy to locate? If so, where do I look or is it a job for a mechanic? Thanks again, Les

if you have some ramps, run it up on those,

get underneath and have a gentle tug at the cables you can see going to the back wheel. You'll soon see any unintended freedom. Barring that, a quick trip to Kwik-fit or similar and have them hoist it and inspect it for you. If it's as simple as a clip. it shouldn't be much of a job.
