mystery valve stem seals ...

... on purchasing a new set of valve stem oil seals from the local stealership, i noticed that along with the eight regular seals there are four much longer, much thinner, clear plastic sheaths - which obviously fit over only four of the valve stems. but which four, inlet or exhaust?? my guess would be inlet, since they're so thin that the heat of the exhaust valves would melt them in pretty short order ... or is this what's supposed to happen??

ok, figured it out (with a little help from haynes): the little sleeves are for covering each valve stem as the seals are installed, so the collet lip doesn't damage the seal.

good job you didn't let them melt in the exhaust stems then! lol
