Last night in North London (say no more...) some nasty chav nicked the badge from my 190E. I've seen replacements for sale on eBay, and I notice from this site that you can get one from a Merc dealer for about £15. However, please can someone tell me how easy they are to fit, how to do so etc? I'm sure this has happened to many of you, given the number of poor de-badged Mercs I see these days.

Quite straightforward. Under the grille, use a pair of pliers or, I found even better, pipegrips, and pull the retaining cap down against the spring tension which is fairly strong, turn anticlock about 90 degrees and it should lock there. Remove the badge from the top of the grille. Replacement is just a reversal of the procedure.

be wary of ebay ones - some are really crap and the chrome can start to flake off, even the MB hologram on the box isn't a guarantee, the Taiwanese are pretty good at faking packaging these days. There are a couple of good MB parts guys on ebay whose reputation is worth something - so possibly get one from them.
Personally for the cost, I'd be down to the dealer. The beastie boys are long gone and the last badge we lost was 19 years ago.

I heard a commotion outside my house about 4 years ago and was out of the door quick enough to catch two teenage girls yanking the star off my LHD '89 200E.

I bought a new badge only a couple of years ago in Finland- it cost ?18.The merc dealer here(VEHO) wanted ?55!!!The bandits!Funny that the badge I got was OE.It really is easy to fit, slot it in and turn it,water pump pliers a good idea. The boot badge is even simpler to replace, just three pins to ease out.

I still have the same car, 1 auto gearbox later.(October 2003).

Can't help...but

How about this for an idea to stop further interference:
With a few bits bought from Maplins, it shouldn't be too difficult to rig up a largeish capacitor beneath the bonnet that connects, via the battery through to the badge (insulated from the surrounding metal-work of course).
The net result being that if some little c*** tries it again, they get a massive shock through their arm.
Don't get me wrong -I don't subscribe to the "if it aint yours don't touch, and if you do, you're going to DIE" mentality; the shock would just be a harmless (though nasty) experience.

Superb idea that Ive read many times before. Unfortunately it could find you in court with a criminal record :-( The crims of this country hold all the cards with our insane, bleeding hearts, "he only did it cos his farther told him off once or twice when he was a child your honer, and he gets depressed cos he can only afford to get ****ed on white lightning cider and he owed his dealer £40 for his skunk weed" society!!!!

Makes me sick but that's the society we live in today

It must be silly season again. The other night, some intellectual tried to nick the badge off the C. Left it hanging on the spring. Popped it down to the dealer. £12+vat and they fitted it for free. I know its hardly a major task but considering, I can't see the point of going to ebay.
We also had the batteries in the remotes replaced at the same time (another £3 for the 3) and for that, they fitted them and re-initialised the system at the same time so we now have 3 fully working remotes too.
All in all, not bad for £15.

The beastie boys are long gone

They are still around - been with us for 24 years now, and are currently in the studio recording a new album!!

Some of their later stuff is much better than the earlier "Fight for your right to Party" stuff.

Lets hope their fans don't start up with the badge collecting thing though - especially mine!
