Hello Mike could be fanbelt skidding, iderwheel or the water pump, they are the most common.

thanks television, i thought it was the water pump as its in that general direction, think the fan belt is ok, as the sound has that sort of metallic squeek iv' e heard before when bearings fail etc.
thanks

Just changed the alternator on my C32 for exactly this type of fault. Noisy front bearing could easily be tracked down with a long screwdriver and handle in the ear.

If a squirt of WD40 on the bearing changes the sound, then you know it is that bearing causing the problem.
At least then you should be able to tell if it is the alternator, water pump, or power streering.

Could be the crankshaft damper pulley breaking up, it can touch the sump/front cover area & make some 'orrible noises.
