I can't understand why the govt would care. Ok - it doesn't serve any purpose but it doesn't do any harm either. Provided the plate is to spec and is ANPR readable, it just smacks of Gordon's Stalinist culture creeping through. That said, it was in response to a question ( a stupid one given that the law is pretty clear) rather than a statement of policy so can probably be ignored.

Re the MOT this should make no difference yet as the new number plate details are still on hold. I will post up when the new number plate reform comes into effect with the MOT

I'm sure I read in a local paper recently that N.Wales Police are taking a 'soft'approach to this i.e. ignoring it.And rightly so.I was going to ask about MOT implications, but Malcolm seems to have cleared that up.

I had this for 12 years, it saves putting up a GB sticker every time we venture to the continent.

Do you means I have to change it to EU now? 12 years ago it not a requirement.

As far as I'm aware the GB marker on your plate is still the only 'legal' one for driving abroad. All others, including the welsh dog with wings, are decoration only and require an additional sticker on the rear of the vehicle.
I hadn't realised they were actually against the law though. I think you'd have to come across a particularly pedantic cop to get done for that.

Newsflash: Wales is in Europe! Unless I missed the bit where they made it into a new continent. :)
I'm not even British (though European) and I have GB plates. Big deal!

Here's another one: Where I grew up, Scotland was part of England, Wales wasn't mentioned. :D

You are clearly very confident about your health insurance arrangements!

:D

In my youth I actually said that out loud in a pub in Scotland once, left shortly after!

I have since learned the error of my ways. :)

It not the UK government is the problem, it EU controlled at Brussels. They are the one who said you can't have a longer cucumber than the one they specified. It has been going on since we joined EEC.

Didn't you hear all cars have to have headlight on day or night. It bl**dy EC.

Don't you know that?

Cucumbers for sale in UK must be between a certain length and straight and cannot be of any shape. Heard that in 1979 when we were in EEC.

It is the fault of successive governments (and i use the term loosely) here for traitorously signing away our national sovereignty progressively over the years since Heath conned the nation with the innocuous sounding common market back in the early 70's.

Thousands upon countless of our good men and true lie fallen on foreign soil keeping all sorts at bay, and these swine have given it all away for their 20 pieces of silver, may they rot in a special hell.

The greatest tragedy of all is that i cannot see a good man or woman from the Churchill mould anywhere in our corrupted main political parties prepared to stand up and speak the truth.

We as a nation are to blame, we unfortunately have the leaders we deserve.

Freind of mine got fined £60.00 no points for having VW in the corner of his plates. Mobile camra vans are taking pics and prosecutting for this offence now, also illegally spaced numbers and all that goes with them.

Not really. The minister made clear this law was passed 7 years ago: -
"Regulations concerning the display of flags came into force seven years ago, according to Mr Fitzpatrick, who was responding to a Parliamentary question."

It is illegal now according to the link.

The hypocrisy of that stuns me. The govt makes a fortune selling special numbers to people knowing full well how thay rae used and why they are fun for some, and then fines people for doing just what the govt knew they would do. What's the word I'm looking for .....

With the start of number plate recognition devices the MOT stations were ask to look at the plates and fail them if they were not stamped BS

The wording on the document was unclear and the rule suspended in May this year. it has not yet been updated
