Well, never actually started so it should read, failed at the first turn off the key... And the second...Nothing, dim display too.

Battery is on holiday? So out came the tools :D showing this (Pic below).

The original, 74Ah 400Adin 680A (circa 2000), MB battery. No one has laid eyes on this bad boy since the day it was fitted.

I heaved the sucker out of the car with little effort (I'm that strong) and administered some desperate last aid...

It was showing 9.6 volt, something is up? Opened the cells to find them very low (Damn!) on water/acid mix.

I added the required top-up water and took another reading. 11.3 volts. Getting better :) so I've left it on my trickle charger until the morning. It will trip out at 13.6 volts or keep trying. Wish me luck.

I wonder if they fitted the battery under the bonnet, MB mechanics might actually check the battery during a service, once in seven years is obvioulsy too much to ask as no one checked this one!?

I have SWMBO to thank. She left me radio on in the car when it was last used 2 days ago. That was more than enough to kaput the battery. She works in mysterious ways, always finding jobs for me to do. Lol.

I also found the cause of the smell in the car. A long lost sweet that is slowly morphing into something very nasty (see seatbelt anchor, now cleaned) and just under one pound in loose change (lol) a Bart Simpson keyring and some fluff. Not bad for a ten min job all in all. The things you find when you go looking.

If you can before you join up after the charge, cream the top off the charge with something like a headlamp bulb so that the voltage does not read more than 12.5volt and turn the headlamps on when you join up

Battery was showing 13.4 volts. Connected back into the car and she started first time.

But, now the BAS and ABS fault lights are showing and it's saying visit workshop! Help!

I've broke it... :(

I think this is the usual Turn the steering wheel lock to lock 3 times, to reset.

Its best to do this on a slow roll, so as not to strain things too much.

How bizzare! I'll try that and report back. Thanks coolpot.

As coolpot, it is to set the ESP, so that the system knows where the straight ahead position is

Television,

Going off-topic, sorry - but could you please explain the Heater Electric Boost on my ML? My understanding is, that once below a certain outside temperature, the boost comes on immediately (assuming of course, that the heater temperature is turned up). Is this a standard fit on my ML?

Thanks in advance.

Coolpot was spot on and both faults are now cleared (thank god) but I'm still having trouble!

Now the leccy windows will go down but not up!? The only way I can get them to close is to constantly flick the switch up over and over again and very slowly they close (Even with the engine running). Anyone help with this? Most strange...

TIA John.

More accurate info'. The one touch open close is not working. The windows now close and open OK, just not the one stop option?

With the key in 2 hold the button down for 10 sec, then close the window and hold the switch for 10sec, this should re set them.

I am sorry but this is something that I can answer, another owner should be able to say, It may be better to ask on a separate thread

Thanks Malcolm; I have just fixed this after reading page 157 in the owner's manual on resetting the windows after power loss/disconnection.

It stated. Key in 2 position window up and hold the switch closed for one second (I counted to 3) and repeat for all four windows and yes it works perfectly once more. Magic!

So the E Class is the first car I've ever had that fixes itself! I'm humbled and probably not worthy enough to own such a fine motor car.

Thank god it survived the "hard re-boot" unscathed. Lol
