1996 Pegeuot 205 auto- runs on after you turn off the ignition, also fuel supply problems -needing to 'tap' the fuel filter and engine backfiring.
Garages he's taken it to seem not able to fix it.
Anyone got any ideas?

Engine timing out can make the cylinder haed too hot causing pre ignition and back firing.

sorry- bad info- it's a '91 Pug 205, carb I believe. Is it difficult to adjust the mixture on these? I'm used to bosch electronic injection and diesel engines!
I presume the running on after shut-off could be a bad stop solenoid?

OK we are talking petrol engines, cant be a fuel problem as it runs with spark plug and ignition. Once the key is turned off, no spark = no go.
unless the engine is to far retarded this will cause excessive heat in the cylider head and you get pre ignition, life has been like that sinse I can remember.

I go with what tom says to test the valve let the engine idle and remove the wire from the valve and the engine should cut out. many ford fiesta,s & escorts had this problem if the fuel shut off valve on the carb was faulty.

If it does prove to be faulty, you can 'bodge' it by simply removing it, cutting off the end of the plunger with stout pliers and replacing. Will keep you mobile till you get another.

One last thing to check is leaking inlet gaskets, under carb and manifold - causes weak mixture and overheating of the cylinder head carbon resulting in pre-ignition. To check, use a can of WD40 or equiv. and spray liberally around the manifold whilst the engine is running at idle. If the engine note changes or speeds up then you've got a leak, if not then the WD40 will smell nice on a clean engine:lol:
