My esp/abs light will not go out, I had a diagnostic check done by my local garage and they said the steering angle sensor had gone and when I called mercedes they said a new one was £428 INC vat, plus 5 hours labour! any suggestions for a cheaper fix?

ML sterring coloum

HI

what ever you do don't have the coloum replaced yet, stop and think for a while before spending that kind of money.

ML's are very sensative to steering angle errors and this always flags up the sensor as the fault, a lot has to do with the recent history of the car.

The correct methode to set up an ML is remove the key and get the steering lock to engage, this is the straight ahead posistion ( try and find the neutral posistion when locked) if the steering wheel is not correct remove the steering wheel and correct the posistion on the splines ( there should be a mark on the coloum visible after removing the bolt) Then lift the vehicle and check the rack por central position (line up mark on plastic collar to rack input shaft to the markon the rack casing) If all these are aligned then set the track to drive straight ahead with the colum in this posistion.

When this stage is complete the vehicle should drive in a straight line with the steering wheel in the correct posistion,

If the problem is still present check the actual value of the steering angle sensor (star machine) if this is more than 2.5 degrees out this will iluminate the bas esp light and log a steering angle sensor fault

When you are sure steering wheel, coloum, rack and front wheels are all aligned correctly carry out a reset of " zero point error" (star machine)

I know this sound complicated but it all takes less than two hours unfortunatley it does have to be done by a dealer and the guy donig the job has to know about this problem

However as I said recent history is all important has it been tracked? has the sterring wheel been off? has it had a light impact at the front ? all of the above can create the 2.5 degree error required to put the light on and give steering angle sensor fault, I wouldn't like you to put a coloum on and still have the same problem

good luck
