Friend of mine has exactly the same CL500 W140, his car has some rust in the usual places and we want to get it sorted. Wheres the best place to get paint from, never bought paint before, do I go to MB or can I buy it locally from anywhere.

Look in Yellow Pages under Motor Factors most will sell paint and possibly mix it to your exact colour, or will tell you where the local paint shop suppliers are

You have a paint code on the car, either inside the front wing or in the boot.

Brilliant silver for instance is 044

Halfords are doing a buy 2 get 3 the colours are a perfect match

Look for Brown Brothers in the yellow pages under motor factors.

I would disagree with Television on this one, yes the Paint colour will be a perfect match, if the car has never been out side in the sun, but with weathering etc; the colour will have faded / changed colour slightly, you will need to get the colour matched, for example my S Class has the colour code 366 which is Azurite Blue but when I wanted paint the colour comes out as 366 UU which allows for weathering. Basically be carefull when buying paint.

Problem is the car has been painted before and badly, the finish is very orange peel or dull, we can mechanically recover the finish but this isnt ideal as we dont know the thinkness of the paint.

My Cl and the CL in need of painting are the same colour codes yet my CL has a rich ruby redness to it, there is a colour difference between the two cars, I will remove the wing mirror and get it matched that way.

You are welcome to disagree. Modern water based systems do not fade, and every car is out in the sun. If the paint changed that much, there would be little point in putting a paint code on the car.

There is a big problem with painting at home now, in fact it is impossible to do anything other than stone chips, the reason is the process used by the manufacture is different to what you can use at home.

All paint systems from the mid 90's are water based, this is a base coat (colour coat) followed up with a two component clear.
The base coat that you buy in a Aerosol is cellulose based, thats is not the same as the original water base paint but will be a good match. In a paint shop, fading is achieved by adding top coat if not a good match

The snag comes with the top coat, two pack is much clearer than the cellulose in a aerosol, this in fact is cloudy by comparison. You can paint the car in the base coat aerosol and it will look ok, put the cellulose top coat on and the colour is too dark. Two conponent paints must be baked on

By using the Paint code 90% of cars a refinished this way, it is possible to blend in using a high power thinners, ok for bumper damage, say a corner as you can lose the blend on a curve.

There will always be the odd man out, but in general it works fine, and I can still do it

Television, --If that is the case then when you open the doors and look at the door shuts they appear to be a different colour the the rest of the car. The Gentleman who sprayed the front of my 1998 S Class told me that he would have to order a specific colour of paint as the original colour had, in his words "weathered" and this was the only way to get a matching colour. this is from a gentleman aged in his late 50's who has worked in the body shop most of his life and at one time used to spray my lorries.

There is always the odd man out, I am still active in this line, there is always the one that does not conform, we have not mixed a colour for ages, and use the codes for most.
