Thanks Dave, will give them a try

Does your E250D have factory aircon by the way, I could do with someone to compare notes with, mines gone all strange on me.

Firstly the constant air temperature isn't constant so I get a huge dump of hot air when the engine warms up and can't seem to turn it down.

Secondly the front screen air dryer button has stopped working.  It used to be very effective when the engine was cold and blasted warm air onto the windscreen to demist whilst closing all other vents - now it does nothing.

My guess is the electronics are busted - any ideas?

Andy,
its fitted with air con , 3 vertical buttons and was factory fitted in 1995.

Latest news is that I have changed both the duo valve and the heater control unit and still the heat cannot be controlled - this is turning into a nightmare for my bank balance - any ideas gratefully accepted.

regarding heating , on one side I can turn it down but on the other its either v.hot or medium hot.  If I swop the connections over it reverses and it makes no difference which controller or duo valve I use still the same.

Hi Keith,

This is ONLY  a stab in the dark. Since really you should take the plunge and get it into me!!!

In the roof there is a little sensor. In the panel which house's the sunroof switch. If you look closely there is a small square section this is the sensor which senses the in car temp. They are about twelve quid. I have had problems with these in the past. But I not putting my name on line hear to say that is the problem. By the way was the control panel new or second hand?

Regards

thanks for the tip, I will go and change it just in case but I've done extensive testing with my multimeter and I think all the electrics are working as the voltage at the valves seems to reflect what should be happening.

However I am now more suspicious of the heater matrix itself so will post another topic on that to see what info I can get.

The control unit was from a breaker.

have you try to use some electrical cleaning solvent to clean the contact of that potential meter? and have u use the multimeter to compare the resistance of both the temperature setting knob? (in different position), as mind also have this problem few month ago, and I have solve it out by cleaning the internal contact of the potential meter (variable resister).

thanks for the suggestion Iwill certainly try it.   My suspicion has now moved to the controls, having replaced everything else!  I can get hot and cold but by manual intervention but I can't get anything in between so fingers crossed , will let you know.
