not sure if this is the right area to post but here goes

my c220 is ten years old, and the gear stick cover looks like crap (see photo)

i asked in the merc dealer can i just replace the 'cover' but they said nope, its all a 'one part' and hence expensive

so what exactly do i need to change and how do i do it ?

cheers

When they say "all one part" do they mean the gearstick and cover? And how much do they want for the parts?

You could try Mercman or Dronsfields or any similar breakers.

I don't know the answer to this one, but I find it very hard to believe one would have to buy the complete lever assembly just for a cover. Surely this can't be the case? If it is, would it be too difficult to make one? Remove the gear lever and use the old one as a pattern even. (Talk nicely to the lady of the house - not to remove the gear lever I mean, but to make a cover!).

thats a good idea,

however i havent a clue how to get it off, i know the bottom hard plastic assembly with the two electric window switches (and where the gear stick sits) pops out, and that the gear stick material seems to be 'stuck' to that plastic, but how i remove the cloth from the gear stick is beyond me,

so i was kinda hoping someone here like jberks would have had done this already

so cmon guys, tell me what i need to do :p

cheers

Sorry mate - not something I've ever attempted - I always run autos so its not an issue.

Looking at the photo I suspect that the gear knob either pulls or twists off and that the fabric gaiter goes with it. It looks to me like the fabric is sewn to the gearknob, possibly either just sewn tight around a ridge in the neck at the bottom, or else there will be a plastic cap to trap it on the inside.

I'd figure out how to remove the handle (try twisting) and then remove the gaiter and knob together. Once off, it should be easy to see how the 2 parts go together.
cheers,
JB.
