neither soft or hard top will latch into place

I'm having problems getting either the soft or the hard top to latch onto the body of my '96 SL500. There seems to be some sort of communication problem between the switch and the relevant catches. The red light on the switch remains on. Can anyone help, please? Rob53

The most common problem is when fitting the hard top and one or both of the rear locks gets closed, they can be opened with the manual key or often by disconnecting the battery for 5 mins

Thanks Malcom, one of the catches was in the closed position, yes, but I've managed to open it manually. I can latch the front but the roof won't latch down at the back and close properly, as a result of which, there is an alarm reminding me it is not secure. So the car's in the garage and can't come out really! It seems as though the system thinks it has gone through the whole closing sequence, yet it hadn't grabbed the roof properly so won't reopen it, thinking it's not closed either! Hard to explain! I'm wondering if the fault would need to be deleted from the computer memory? Rob.

Thanks guys...Sorry, Malcolm, I spelt your name wrongly last time! Yes, the battery's good and I've disconnected it, waited and tried again, to no avail...

OK the main points with the roof are

The roof needs to know where the roll bar is, does this work.

The roof needs to know where the windows are, so they need to be set by holding down the switch in key 2 for 10 sec, then up the same

Shine a torch into the rear locks to be sure that they are open.

Have you tried locking it with the key both back and front
