Er ... might need a little more information.
First things that come to mind in order of expense - dead key, dead battery, faulty selector, faulty starter, faulty EIS.

As above but, I thought key was only needed to enter the vehicle, as soon as it’s in the ignition, then the EIS powers it.

Also can you turn your key in the ignition?

You can (by application of the foot brake) get the selector to move - I do that to get my SLK into neutral so I can push it in/out of my garage with the engine off.

Well guys I thought it may be battery related as I've never replaced it and did eventually get it to start with jump leads, fitted a new battery and now I can hear the solenoid engaging but not cranking, also when I do have it running selecting reverse gear is a problem, select easy if car is rolling backwards at same time, the old original battery was showing low on a battery led meter and no faults with alternator if any of this info helps

The latest development is, the car now starts and drives forward but won't let me select reverse on the gear lever whilst the footbrake is depressed?

So now I'm thinking auxiliary battery but I can't find one where Google says it should be located, anyone know something that I don't?

Aux battery was phased out around 2006, if you have one it is usually under the pollen filter if your main battery is in the boot.

Ah-ah a bit more clarity at last there's no battery under the pollen filter so I have to guess there isn't one, thanks for that

Selector module is failing.

could it be the electrical connector on the box. known to let on moisture and replacing rubber grommet should be maintenance.

The reverse lockout symptom is nearly always the selector module.
