obviously the s-class will be a bugger to run ( i dont mind that ).

Big heavy car,

8 cyl should be a lot better. Not a big difference in MPG.
I've test driven an old 300SE and found it very slow.
It probably boils down to budget.

Well built cars and very cheap.
Spares should not be a problem at all (used or new).

My opinion: 500SEL, 560SEL. Lots of guys on this forum have 500s &560s and should be able to advise.

Go for it BIG J

500 Sel

If considering 500SEL have the car inspected by someone who thoroughly knows these beasts. Car is loaded with gizmos which should definitely work, like AC, electric seats, closing assist and rear windows. If not, it gets exbenzive.

Full service history should be available. This car is cheap, why?

Otherwise joy to ride and own.

The SEL is a longer version of the SE. Cannot remember exactly how many inches (maybe 10)

The old W126 chassis was replaced with the W140 (big double glazed model) in 91-92

It kept its name SE and SEL until mid 93, when (like all MBs), the letter was put in front of the number. IE your S500. As far as I know, the 300 had a 3.2 engine (straight six). Even the sel, sec (coupe) was then called s500, S600 etc.

The above data is just taken from my memory, and there are other members (with more experience) whom will contradict some of it, but it still answers your question.

Car was something like £ 60.000 when new. £ 3.000 represents 5% residual value.
Long wheelbase was 4" longer than SWB. Easy to identify: if you can carry your beerboxes piled in front of the rear seat = LWB.

Thanks Marku,

I was close with the '10' (10cm eh!). Knew it was barely noticable on the outside. The previous model's LWB was in my opinion more distinguisable from it's sibling.

Hope you got all that, BJ.
