Tonight I just got my hands on a lovely little 2003 A190, my first ever merc. and quite a step up from the '95 Honda Civic it is replacing.

Being 24 and living in a city with the highest insurance rate doesn't help getting insurance and quotes I'm looking at the moment are around £1300, which is about £300 more than I was looking to pay on a 1.4 honda civic.

I've read about the trick of adding a female named driver to bring costs down but are there any specific insurers or tricks I can use to try and get the insurance cost less than the value of the car itself!

Thanks

I always add my Mum or Dad which brings it down a bit. When I got married and changed the Miss to a Mrs, that also bought it down; Although the cost of a wedding etc does out-weigh any insurance cost advantage ;)

You can only use the female driver trick for another 6 months - from December an EU directive prohibits the charging of different premiums by gender, although age isn't affected. Be careful though not to fall into the trap of thinking it's ok to say someone older is driving when they blatantly are not.

I don't know (or won't admit to) any other 'tricks' but will say this:

1. Don't compare the premium to the value of your car. It's not that you're paying for, it's the Ferrari or SLK you write off that costs money!!

2. Whatever you do, be honest. Insurers can and do have ways of finding you out if you tell any porkies, however small.

The best I can recommend is to shop around and make sure you have a play with excesses - you're effectively putting off that part of the cost unless/until you have a claim, so work out the most you could pay if you did claim, deduct any compulsory excess (they vary a lot) and choose a voluntary excess to match. If you go a year without claiming, then you have something in your virtual 'pot' for next year!
