IIRC there are two different lengths for alloy bolts - I can't remember the measurements but I think they are about 10mm-15mm different in length.

You need to talk to your dealer and ask him which size bolts you need

remove the back wheels and look for damage,

that way you'll know if the bolts were wrong or not

cheers

alloys ??

i have got smiths 10 spoke alloys on the c180 (looks nice) (or did have) it would appear that the 20mm thread is too long will go to work tomorrow and cut 5mm off. have got to nice alloys on the front and 2 manky steel on the rear . might start a new trend ????

I believe the correct length is 28mm(overall length)

that sounds right for OEM wheels, but non standard ones will require different bolts.

You need to measure how much the bolt protrudes from a standard rim (even use your stell one with a steel bolt) then trim your wheel bolts accordingly.

Too long and you'll wreck the handbrake, too short and you run the risk of the bolts undoing themselves

yeah that sounds about right :)

measure the steel wheel bolt (with the steel wheel) and then measure the alloy bolt with the alloy - my guess is you need about 5 turns of the bolt from the moment the thread "bites"

I have samples of both types of wheel bolt. The only difference between them is that there is a steel extension between the cone cup that aligns with the hole in the wheel and the head. The thread lenght in both is approx 20mm with an threaded portion approx 20mm in length. In service the difference is that the head of the longer bolt is flush with the outer surface of the wheel and the shorter one is recessed. There are pictures of both in my owners manual (w210 E200).
