I need to change my main battery, Car is C Class C220 Diesel automatic Blutec, 2014. W205 Chassis, been quoted an eye watering £246 inc vat. at the main stealers. My question is can I just put a quality branded battery on, and is it a straight swop, or do I need to have it programmed or any other stuff ? ps. any recommendations would be nice..

Yeah why not? I'm topping my AGM battery up this week, gonna test it at the weekend. But a new one was loads from Mercedes and ECP. I've seen them (new) much cheaper on Ebay actually.

I don't think you need to register a new bat, might be wrong. I've fitted new batteries to BMW's that it was claimed you have to register, never bothered, never had an issue.

You should replace your spent battery with exactly the same spec battery in every aspect, i.e. type, capacity, CCA, size and posts or lugs then changeover will be flawless, type is important so the charging profile of your existing OEM Battery Control Module will match your new battery, i'e' AGM for AGM, EFL for EFL etc, don't be misled by installing anything different to the original you will be any better off, it doesn't always work out that way!

Well stop/start. has started working again, wish it would make it's tw**ing mind up. But am I right in thinking all the stopping and starting will just put extra strain on the starter motor and battery ?

Stop/start will halve the life of your battery, smart charging used on a 2011+Merc`s will only charge the battery up to around 75% under engine power, the rest has to come from energy recuperation if there is any, that`s why stop/start is intermittent especially on short journey`s. The most stress on the weak single row Merc timing chain is when overcoming the moment of inertia, that`s each time the engine is started. Smart charging and stop/start save a small amount of fuel but one will shorten the life of the battery (at least by half) and also considerably shorten the life of the timing chain + tensioners + guides, the other can leave you stranded if the car is left with a partially charged battery for a reasonable length of time say at airport

My battery on my 2011 C-Class coupe is stamped 3811, still starts car first time every time, I have never used stop/start and disabled it 13 months ago.

I used stop start for 48k miles in my W213 with zero issues, just increased fuel economy. Never turned it off and never had a battery or simplex chain issue.
