New C has no side markers?

 My friend just bought a new C320 (US Spec), and when I was looking it over I noticed something peculiar.  To my knowledge, all Mercedes-Benz vehicle's have to have side markers because they are required in Germany.  My dad's ML320 has it, and so does his 1986 300E.  Did they put them on the C-Class, just not on the US spec models?  I was thinking they might have left them off for US production (I live in the USA) to get ahead of the competition in terms of style or something like that.  Does the Euro Version of the new C have side markers or do they just consider the turn signals in the rear view mirrors/outer edges of the front bumper to be sufficient?

As far as i was aware, here in the UK all cars had to have side repeaters after a certain model year, 1985 or something like that, otherwise they wont pass the MOT. My 1987 190E has got them, however i have also got a 1985 Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia X and that hasnt got them, hence me getting into a bit of an argument at the garage the other week!!

That is correct, from 1985 all european cars have to have side repeaters. In the us the spec for the lighting system is completely different, for a start the running lights are where the indicators on the uk models are. Is this car in the uk or overseas?
The headlamps and bumpers are also different for the us spec

sorry, have just realised what you mean. in the uk and europe we do not have side markers as a standard fitment, the lamps you are thinking of are indicators

I think im losing the plot here!, i take it side markers are the constant orange lights that you see on US cars, and not the indicators i was on about. I think the Volvo S40 has side markers on them, even here in the UK.
