Steve,

Glad you've now got something with a bit of oomph to enjoy. I couldn't understand why you had a 'old giffer' E220 at your age (it's OK for me - I am an old giffer).

I still miss the 6 pot engines from previous cars and if I buy another MB, it'll need to have more than 4 cylinders - that's really the only thing wrong with the E220. The power is good enough, but not the racket and lack of V6 refinement.

Enjoy all that BHP and torque in the new toy - but mind how you go mate.

Its something else. I really liked the 211 but a 220cdi was all I could afford. Some saving has got me this. Its a wonderful wonderful car, such a jump up. The power is handy and you do not want for more, honestly.

Strangely its easier to drive slowly than a 220cdi, as the car is refined at such low speed it just wafts regally along, whereas the 220cdi made too much noise until higher speeds when it was in gears 4/5.

At the next meet I'll take you out in it, so nice and smooth.

Sounds as though your apprenticeship is nearing completion and that you are close to achieving total smoothness?

Yep - you're right on the money there. It's the refinement I miss from my now departed V6 more than the performance. Of course, this is only a 'one-off' purchase for you and the next car will be more 'sensible' - yeah right!! :)

It's not just about refinement.
High torque engines tend to make one drive less frantically as you can hang back then overtake quickly, whereas in lower torque cars you need to maximise any opportunity so drive closer to other cars.

Been up and back to Glasgow today, 40.4 on way up, 40.6mpg on way back. Say 3mpg short of the old car. Nowt really.

Cars average is 37mpg quoted so beating that without difficulty.
7% difference, and you're driving it more leisurely to achieve that.

Give it a week....;)

Ok, I only got 30mpg out of it today, but then again, I was trying to see how low it could go.

Steady Steve, another 3 points will do wonders for the mpg...
