Just picked up my E320cdi - anyone who wants a near perfect 1996 W124 E280 estate, please email me.

How do they get a diesel to run so quietly, outside it is as quiet as many petol engines - inside I think that it is as quiet as my E280 petrol.... and they say that the V6 Diesels are even better!

Nice surprise looking at the spec from the Russian site - apparently the car has Xenon lights - I know that this is a desirable option, although I have never has a car with Xenon lights before, I look forward to taking it out in the dark to see the difference (A bit sad I know)

I had a really good look at the car, everything works perfectly, except the auto closure on the boot lid - I will tryto get that fixed

Hopefully I will not be calling on Eric and Malcom too soon for technical advice - Actually, I find their rivalry quite helful, it is always useful to have 2 opinions, I hope that they both see the amusing side to some of the threads

First job is to get it serviced. The service indicator shows that it is 8400 miles overdue a service, however, checked out with the indi who looked after the car and it was serviced in January, however, the indicator was not reset at the time. The oil looks OK, not too black, so I guess that it checks out

The rust that I was concerned about seems much less now that I have the car. The front wings have a couple of spots at the bottom of the wheel arches, same on the rear wing (almost a pin prick of rust). The rusty patch on the door appears to stem from a chip that has allowed rust in - it is about the size of a 2p coin and looks like surface rust.

Hi Matt,

Your right about the V6 diesels. i've got the straight 6 in my E320, but last year i borrowed an E320 CDi with the new V6 320 for 12 weeks. What a peach of an engine. It really is so much quieter, and seems so much quicker, (not sure if that had anything to do with the 6 speed auto compared to my 5 speed auto tho) After the 12 weeks and i went back to my car, i thought i'd had a tractor engine installed, i couldn't believe how much more noise there was inside and outside. I've since got used to mine again now, you'll love your E320, it always makes me smile when i :D mash the throttle and it just picks up and goes :D

You will enjoy the 320cdi. Just keep the services up to date. A few things on high mileage cars.

Transmission oil change every 65k. If in doubt get it done, they were originally to be sealed for life and this was changed not so long ago to a recommended 65k. The transmission servo can go, mine cost about €700.

Batteries when they are failing cause funny problems. If you even suspect the battery dont go spending big money chasing electrical problems until you are 100% sure the batter is ok. New battery cost me €90. A dud battery can make things like alternator failure show up on a perfectly good one.

There is a cooling fan on the ECU, if that goes it fries. My dealer repalces them now on 6/7 year old cars as a matter of course. Mine was gone and had not bene spotted, it would have friend in hot weather.

Watch front cross member corrosion.

Drop links, these little things in the front are cheap, life is anything from 20-50k and when they go you get knocks etc. We pay about €15 each for them and they are simple to fit.

Keep an eye on thing slike wheel sensors and watch the instructions on doing things like rotating wheels [not swapping them, I mean turning them] when working underneath.

You will enjoy it. In my mind, going on experience I would feel a 110k car is less likely to have issues than a 60k car.

I've been up the smoke and took the train, I wish I had driven as I would have got there 3 hrs earlier and been home 2 hrs earlier than the train.

Interesting, I don't actually know where the ECU is - can anybody fill me in, so I can lubricate this fan?

I put these details up Parrot, it applies to all 210, the fan control unit goes short circuit and it is wired over the engine ECU just unplug it from the ECU and you do not use the fan anymore.

and thats it
