Hi

Well Iv'e got the other car now,and well fault #1 I cant get the dam car to lock at all,So I just hope its there in the morning.
I'll get to Merc tommorrow sometime and order another key, cause' the only one I have is the "round" one which doesnt fit the boot.I noticed also the radiator warning light came on tonight,so I'll put some water/coolant in it tommorrow and give it a general check over.
Well thats me the owner of 230e,so we'll see how I get on with that, mind you one thing I found very odd indeed was the hand brake, well I'll rephrase that "foot brake" what the h*ll
is the idea of that, good god I tell you something Merc sure do design some dam strange things they really do, honestly.
It was bad enough with two diffirent size mirrors, but now this, what else am I going to find!!,germans very strange people I think!.

Congratulations, hope this one works out ok. With regards to the locking, you should be able to push the locking buttons down from inside manually, then just lock the drivres door with the key.

Also look back through the forums, there has been much talk about central locking faults over the months, read it all carefully and see if any of the answers relate to you. Don't forget what Andy and me are always preaching, START WITH THE BASIC'S FIRST.

I'll have a look in my owners hand book, i think that covers the 230 as well, and i'll email you what Merc publish as the fuel consumption figures, but i think we can rest assured, that what this one does to the litre, the 500 would have used a gallon!

Hi Dave

Thanks!,yea, I'll have a look through the forums about that, but like I say I'll need to get another key ordered the "square" one.
Dave Iv'e got the handbook too,and I was looking at the way the put the fuel consumption down y'know this "Urban=10.9 1/100km" I dont know how to work for that out for MPG,the 500 manual just told you straight what you got (which wasn't alot, probably compared to this) but I'll ask someone how you do it,well if you/someone else doesnt "beat me to it",any I'd better go just now and this key ordered,I'll hear from you later, cheers.

Regards
230E  (that feels weird writing that!)

I had a look at my hand book for consumption figures, it only covers the estate models, which Andy said a few weeks ago have slightly more power, so probably worse fule consumption.

To convert litres/100km.

multiply the litres by .22, this gives gallons.

multiply 100km by .6214, this gives miles

Divide miles by Gallons.........easy.

The figures in my hand book for a 230TE with 4sp auto are as follows.

Urban 11.5l/100km   =23.9368 mpg
90km  7.4l/100km     =38.1695 mpg
120km 9.3l/100km    =30.3714 mpg

Hope this helps, and i hope my maths hold up to scrutiny!!

Glad you have got the new car....you know it makes sense!

As for the "Parking Brake" i think they are a great idea having them on the floor like that, i wish the 190 was the same....

You will get used to it. When i drive my wifes Cavalier, i'm always pressing the clutch pedal, and moaning that it rolls away on hills!!

Hi Dave/Matt

Thanks for working that out for me dave, yea, its better compared to what I was getting.

Matt..,I know you say "great" having the parking brake on the floor,it certainly will take time to get used to it.
Mind you one thing thats kind of (I dont know if worrying is the right term to use)strange, but when your driving but especaily when its "ticking over",the only way I can describe this is there is a kind "water boiling" type of noize coming from (what sounds to me) behind the centre heater vents on the dash.
And quite often the temp guage goes up to dam red, then falls down to half way (this cant be normal cant it?),I was thinking maybe the thermostat is nackered!,and the oil pressure guage, when its ticking over it sits about half way down, but you move off it goes up to 3 as normal, its just in the other car the oil guage sat at 3 all the time.
This makes me wonder if the oil pump is ready to pack in,could this be true.Cause' as you can appreciate, its not untill you drive the car for yourself you start to notice "things".
But if I can have some light shed on these previously mentioned I'd be greatfull, thanks.

Regards

right, points here.

The boiling noise, can you hear this all the time, even when cold?

The temp gauge. How far up does it go before the fan cuts in, around the 100 mark?

Oil pressure, my 190 sits at 3 whilst going along, and just under the 3 when ticking over. if it drops down to the 2 mark, it may mean that you have a slight oil leak somewhere. (this is what was happening when i dicovered the cracked oil filter a while back) check for a puddle under the car.

Matt

You must have wrote you last letter as I was replying, but yep!,I should be able to make it now, cause' I was looking at the figures Dave supplied, and thats better, now I can maybe go a few places without a dam tanker at my back filling "at the ready", (ala,Mad Max,he,he).
But seriously I should be able to get there now,Especialy now have breakdown cover for the first time in life,so even if my on the down there and the unforseen should happen, well at least I can say to guy in the breakdown truck "Its ok mate I'm going to the Cotswolds, theres a few guys there who should be able to get "on the road again".
Aye!,its really is very helpfull, being on the forum,Oh I think I asked this allready, but is there a relay somewhere (apart fom the fuse) for the front windows,as Iv'e checked the fuse and its fine, anyone any Ideas?
Right I'm off now,but no doubt I'll have some to comment on later, see ya.

Matt

I'll need to "sit" at my garage to see if the fan cuts in,all I know is that when iv'e seen it its dam near in the red,I'll have a closer look this afternoon.

As for the oil pressure, yes I have an oil leak, around the rocker cover,so I'm hoping thats its just that, and not the cylinder head.
What I'll do is "gunk" round it,and wash it off, then see where its coming from, yes, that might explain that,I forgot about that,I dont mean I forgot about the leak,I meant any car Iv'e had with a oil guage, its allways been fine, thats why I wasnt sure about this one.

The rocker cover will be the cause of the oil guage dropping, it will probably be easier just to get a new Gasket for it.....is it a straight six in your car?

and as you say sit with the engibe running, and let us know what happens.

Merc.

As Matt said, check for oil leaks, but most importantly, check you have the right amount in there.

With regards to pressure, my old 250D and this one both run at 3 when driving, but drop to just about 2 on idle, so this would appear to be the norm. You would be amazed just how low the oil pressure can be, and the engine still be perfectly happy, 30psi is not a requirement, merely something people brag about in pubs!!

Well Guys

I checked the engine oil tonight, and its at the top of the Second piece of plastic (at the max) infact just a couple of ml above it,so its no wonder its coming out the dam rocker cover.
There must be about 1ltre and a half more than there should be,but I'll change it tommorrow (well weather permiting). There is a slight "miss/roughness" at idle, and Iv'e put new plugs in it tonight H7DC0's,and do you know,Merc were cheaper than my local factor, for the plugs 'mmmm' it really makes you wonder at times.
I know what Andys saying about the rad,but whats causing it to go through so much water,(maybe its still to do with the term),cause' when I put the plugs in tonight,I put another two ltr's of water/coolant in.
I know I mentioned this earlier about "topping up" the system, cause' I did the same thing with the 500',I thought I was going through water, but it was just so low, instead of 7 ltr's (thereabouts) thats supposed to be in it,there must have been about 4.
So I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe its the same problem I dont know,I'll know after a day or two if I have to keep toping up.
