I am told that the new E class ie the 2002 model needs to be connected up to a computer in order to change the brake pads. Is this not complete madness?
I think the new E class will skim the water off your brake discs while you're moving in the rain and suchlike so I would imagine it's similar to changing ink cartridges where you need to get the printer to move the heads into the correct position.
Not much good for DIY but then they wouldn't really want to encourage you to stray from official stealers anyway
The new E class and the new SL have a new electronic braking system "SBC" It has many safty features to improve braking efficency and as the prevoius post says in the wet depending on the amount of rain (info taken from rain sensor) and vehicle speed it will periodicaly dry the discs, if you are cruising down the motorway and back of the accelarator suddenly it puts the pads right next to the discs ready to brake, it also has the ability to control every brake on the car individually so in the event of emergency braking in a corner at high speed there are no dramatics. I have tested this myself and it is fantastic.
You can change the brake pads without a computer just like the old braking system but if sombody happens to "wake the car up" ie open the door or press the remote lock button the SBC may carry out a self test which may pressurise the system to 180 bar and if your fingers happen to be in the caliper at this time don't expect to see them agian, and don't think that by disconnecting the battery you will stop this, there is a small backup battery under the bonnet for SBC to use in the event of main battery fail.
I must repeat this system is fantastic and I recommend test driving a vehicle with it on you just won't believe it till you have tried it.
