People seem to be tripping over themselves to order the new SLK 280. Admittedly it looks good on paper, providing 'all the go and the show'

However, is this not a 'brand new' 3.0V6 engine?? If so, I think I'd wait x12mths to see how it performs.

Yes I think it is the new 3 liter V6 and indeed you'd be wise to let others to play the guninea pigs.

that's what company car drivers are for. In fact we should be given tax relief for the service offered.........

I don't think Mercedes have much difficulty in making good reliable engines. It's just everything else that they have problems with.

I found that the electronics on the more recent MB models have a tendency to play up every now and then.

the 350 was new when this model launched and wasnt much trouble. the 1.8 was launched in the c-class in 3 power guises. still wasnt much trouble.
the 5.5 V8 is new too. will let you know if it is a problem.

i have to ask tho, if every one thought like this, who would buy a new car?

Who would buy new car??? I thought somebody said company car drivers are the best guinea pigs so I guess company fleets then!

In the old days, my friends from the motoring trade always told me that if I wanted a brand new current model car, always wait a year or two after the model's been brought out or better still, wait till the model undergoes a facelift. The reason??? Apparently this is when many of the initial problems encountered by the first of the range are cured. Sometimes the styling would improve too. I do not know how much of that is still valid today if at all. However after reading the various issues surrounding the facelifted w210 and compared to my (touch wood) trouble free pre-facelifted one, I guess things might have changed.

Then of course buying a car sometimes involves ignoring any rational.

Assuming that the 5.5 V8 you are referring too is the AMG engine then it is not new at all. The AMG version first appeared in about 1999 and is based on the 3 valve per cylinder, twin spark 5.0 V8 which debuted in 1997.

true but it was new then and someone bought it.

this argument is the same as all those who say they would never buy a new car, even if the one the lottery, as you lose too much. considering nearly 2 m buy new cars in the uk every year it isnt a valid argument.

some car companys bang in new engines to the old models 18months before a change and some wait till a new model arrives and introduce new engines with them. some wait till after. at the end of the day waiting 12months does not prevent you buying a dog of a car. you could wait until the model is awaiting the replacement version so you get a car fully loaded, at a discount and aslo after all the faults have been corrected. but you find that it is a last generation model, so not refined, and the new models have the all the fixes of the old anyway. they just invent new ones.
