The CLS has a new engine known as CGI. that means Stratified charged gasoline. this engine has Piezioelectric injection, somethng that first apeared in deisels 2004.. the Piezoelectric injection sits central in the cylinder head and the sparking plugs are alongside the exhaust valves. the injection pump is used from a deisel of the commaon rail type with a presure of 200 bar low for a deisel, but very high for bensin.
This engine turns out 350Nm at 2400 rpm, at 120 kmh runs at 2,200 RPM with a fuel consumption of .9 liter a Swedish mile (10km) about the same as a average 1.4 liter car

The fuel figure I gave should read town 1.3 liliter per Sweedish mile (10 km)
motorway 0.7 liter, and blended driving 0.9 liter, and these figure's are very low. The 0-62 MPH is 6.7 sec. The exhaust sound is deeper owing to the compression of 12.2 to 1

The new engines are apparently so efficient because they can run in lean burn form even at motorway speeds i.e with a very high air content in the fuel/air mix. This is made possible because the piezo injectors are so accurate and so fast that multiple injections of fuel can be made on each stroke. At motorway speeds economy is up to 15% better than the normal V6 and all around about 10% better. In English that would mean, say 27.5 mpg instead of, say, 25 mpg.

A few miles a gallon is not a huge amount, but it gets interesting because the Euronuts are so constraining diesel engines with particulate filters and so on that they now only give about 20% better fuel economy than petrol of similar perofrmance.

The ML (AUTO) is an example where the 3 and a bit litre petrol does about 24/5 to the gallon and the diesel does about 29/30 to the gallon. Make the petrol 10-15% better and it would be ,say, 27/8 for petrol and 29/30 for diesel. Would the boom in diesels come to an abrupt end???
