I've just ordered a new door for my single width, but double length garage. Like most garages of this width, it's too narrow to comfortably drive through the doorway, although it widens out a bit inside.
An electric roller shutter type door is the solution, as it'll be mounted on the inside face of the brick reveal - thus removing the need for a door frame and wooden subframe. I'll gain 250mm in drive-through width by doing this and the sides of the reveal, bearing the scars of the old door frame will be clad in uPVC.
Obviously I'll lose a foot or so length, but its double length and I only garage the Benz, leaving the others out in the rain.
Should be fitted within a fortnight. Need to be careful not to catch the car in the doorway before then!!!

I put my own in Doug and had the same problems as you , and the uprights are fixed to the pillars on the inside,. giving max width on the way in, I got the insulated electric version as I am getting old and lazy and no one to spend my money on

As I thought, beautifully clean surfaces. Exemplary.

The reading this morning comes from:
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showpost.php?p=303578&postcount=45

and at the bit where there is mention of the use of wall space, (shelves, cupboards).

As you reverse in, I assume the wall to our left as we view it is free and above door height in particular?

I have a couple of 120mm kitchen cupboards (with shelves) which accommodate lots of stuff and leave the surfaces free - that wall at the far end looks a tempting home for a similar arrangement.

May we assume that you developed the technique of reverse parking because you could never be sure when her husband might come home unexpectedly early??

I got a Clopay (appears to be the "standard" door used in the US) insulated sectional door from B&Q a few years ago for £250, but they don't sell them now. Shame, I think it's really good (in as much as a garage door could be "good").

It runs on tracks that fit on the inside face although I fitted their optional rubber seal which takes maybe an inch off the opening. It works well and the door sort of clamps against the seal as it closes.

Only disappoinment was that the door on show didn't have a lock or handle fitted and that persuaded me to buy an electric opener to preserve the clean look, only to find when I got the door home that it was pre cut for the laock & handle. Doh!

Though the garage is 8 m long, it is only 2.4 m wide, by driving in backwards, I have the mirror to get close to the wall, I have a long mirror in the doorway in the right, and I can use that mirror in conjunction with the car mirror to get very close, I have a mouse mat stuck to the wall to open the drivers door onto, and its much easier to drive up the drive onto the road in a forward direction.

Totally agree Malcolm - reversing enables great precision, even just on wing mirrors - you have clearly raised this to an art form. I can't help feeling that you may have been inspired by the docking arrangements from "Thunderbirds"?

I have the luxury of space (garage 7.4 m square, 2 individual doors with 2.7 m apertures and no encroachments).

Enables me to reverse in at an angle to the left then square up when inside. This allows space to stack firewood along the wall and yet still open car door fully to throw wooden leg out first, plus a variety of cabinets plus bench to the rear.

I loved the mouse mat idea though - very neat.

I have a large single garage here and the new house has a good sized double garage. Unfortunately my Mercedes will still have to live outside. 3 motor bikes, 10 push bikes and a trailer ensure that.

My garage is 225m long by 275m wide and can hold 150 cars. It has 2 entrances (one 'In' and one 'Out') both of which are electonically controled. It's called an Underground Car Park :D :) :p
