Hi,
I'm new here, I have an old 230 te and am currently having a problem with it.
Is there a section for asking advice please?

Hi, Thanks for your prompt reply :)
The problem I have is that my engine keeps cutting out, this happens randomly, sometimes when I am driving and sometimes when I try to engage gear upon starting, it happens in all weathers, sometimes it will restart easily others it can be up to six attempts.
I have taken the car to the garage and they can find no problem but have replaced the coil and ht leads to try and solve it, this has not worked.
This morning I drove a short distance, 6 miles, to the shop, when I came out started the engine and tried to engage gear it cut out again, this time took 6 attempts to start.
I would appreciate any advice as I am nearing my wits end!:-(
Thankyou, Finnman
PS as you can probably tell I know very little about mechanical stuff!!

Crankshaft position sensor on the way out perhaps?
Hope the garage didn't charge for replacing the coil and ht leads when it didn't solve the problem.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Had EXACTLY the same symptons on a previous car (so did my son on his E-class). As Ron said, it turned out to be the crankshaft sensor. This is cheap to replace.

Please post back to the Forum and let us know how you get on. Thanks.

Hi Guy's
Thanks so much for your replies, I shall wend my way to the village garage tomorrow and astound the mechanic with my new found knowledge!
The only problem I have now is do I let him believe that I have worked this out for myself or do I 'fess up and tell him about the forum of MB Guru's that I have found?
Oh well, I suppose honesty is the best policy, I'll just bask in the reflected limelight!!:p
Will let you know the result. Thanks again.

You are doing something fundamentally wrong.

You are taking your old Merc (which not many general garages understand) to a general garage.

That is a big mistake normally with a Mercedes vehicle.

You need to find a Merc specialist and they will understand the foibles of your car and will be able to test for trouble codes etc before they replace parts, thus saving you money time and aggravation.

I can't think of anything useful to add to this
